    dvd rom power problems

    hi everyone.
i'm running a m2 atx 160w psu. it is running the mb, hdd, a 4 port usb hub and on the hub is the gps and touchscreen for the screen. when i plug my laptop dvd drive in on one of the usb ports on the hub it doesn't have enough power because it can't eject but works perfectly in the house. does anybody know what is going on. this psu should be capable of this kind of load shouldn't it?

Is your usn hub powered or capable of being powered? If so, you should make a barrel plug for it and use the 5 volt rail from the computer's power supply to suffice the power comsumption of your usb devices. Im assuming you're using an external drive enclosure since you said that you can plug it into one of the usb slots on the hub? If so, there should be a power plug on the enclosure. You can also make another barrel plug using another 5 volt line from the computer's power supply and power the drive also.

A non-powered usb hub is not going to do you any good when the touch screen itself already uses 500ma, which is what a non-powered usb hub would be splitting. Powering from a 5 volt source, ie. computer's power supply, would enable the hub to be able to use 500ma per slot.

my usb hub isn't capable of being powered externally. it just plugs in to the usb ont he computer and splits it in to 4ports. i have also spliced in to the molex power plug and connected it to the drive but no luck. i would of thought 160w would be enoough to power a p3 1ghz setup. do you know what else it could be? i do have a lot on the ignition wire ie amps etc, could this have an affect on thepsu?

Try getting a usb hub that can be externally powered. The power supply should be able to power your setup fine. Have you tried plugging you drive directly into a usb slot on the computer instead of through the hub?
