    jsutchat,
    Did you buy the unit(s)?

I was thinking that maybe if we worked with the manufacturers that just maybe they would try a little harder to produce units closer to the infill in quality. (lolo, hour-glass is not cool)

After that...no-I was happy to ship it back lol

There are plenty of companies that will produce a good product given a proper design and a contractual quality agreement. You just wont find something like that done for a hobbyist community of 20people (they sell units by the 100s).

With the rate of infill G4s hour-glassing I'd imagine you'd have 20 units sold

More seriously though, one of the reasons I keep posting here is trying to find a solution that would put a carpc in more people's possession. A 2din unit along the lines of G4 and a decent price point under a J-type 2din navi unit would be a major score.

I figure that here alone crappy 2din ce based units move at 3-6 units / day at about $200-$300. Margins are going to be low.

So, I figure that 3-6 units at $600-700 would be reasonable per month. lolo, even evil-bay could pump those numbers.

Tie this in with extras, this could turn into something a little more than a hobby. Maybe not a full time job but something that could definitely supplement your income.

again, though, the biggest problem is support..

as you said, the volume would not be enough to become a full time job, but who will support the product when it gets a virus, hdd crashes, etc..

no matter who brings a all-in-one product to market, i just don't see enough volume to work the way that they need to.

tinkerers, and tweakers like most of us here are going to have less of a problem with setting up and maintaining a unit like that, but general users that "want a computer in their car" are going to be left with a expensive paperweight...

how many non-computer savy people have you run into with your carpc setup that want it, and would buy it--even if it was $5,000-- but would have no clue what to do when there is a error?

and how would support be handled? i imagine you would probably need to send the whole unit in for repair--and assuming that you have other repairs, it could take up to a month for me to get the unit back...

for me, that is nowhere near acceptable for a unit that cost me $5,000..(when i could get a $2,000 nav hu) but that is the cost of the low volume i guess...

don't get me wrong, i understand that some people have great software skills, but are horrible with setting up all the hardware-- for these people, a all-in-one solution is great--because once you get the unit, most of the errors would probably be software..

but i feel that most of the people that would buy a all-in-one unit would have very limited knowledge of computers beyond using it to download music, facebook, and email... even to try to get them just to change the display resolution could be a chore...

sapporoguy-- i realize my comments can seem a little harsh, none of it is directed at you, or anyone else--just my take on the sad state of all-in-ones..

i think the all-in-one units could really get a lot of new people into the hobby because it would become a lot easier to get a computer into the car(i have run across my fair share of new members here that are looking for something that doesn't take up anything more then a dd space in the dash), but without a decent support structure behind a decent product, and careful product engineering, i just don't see them becoming any more then a repeat of the g4..

To put it mildly...i'm not sure you realize just how much work it takes to get one of those devices to market. Even at 2K per unit those 10/month wouldn't be able to pay minimum wage for the design time required.

No problems getting honest opinions out in the open only helps
I also do agree with most of your comments!

nope! you're dead on about my lack of knowledge. But by being here, I learn
    Thanks!

    @ unit
errors: This is why I am looking for a on-and-go type of OS. Windows requires experience. Hardware errors is the support issue.

@repairs: The market here is 2-4 weeks for regular epson repairs. So, nothing new.

@customers: The market here is non-existent. Just talked with the Chrysler dealer and he looked at with the typical WTF look. Then I saw the dreamy eyed looked of understanding. Once again, as we all know a carpc is a hobby. However, a 2Din navi like unit would be different.

@ future: I really think that those of you who have been at the from the start are pioneers and really get it. Moreover, I also believe that the future is going to be carpc <> net <> data exchange.

@ thoughts: I still would like to see somebody from here getting their share of the pie in the coming future. Since I really would hate to see some big company swooping in and grab the bird that you were so hard chatting up.

    ^^^^

totally agree with most of what's been said. Hardware-wise it's probably not impossible to build a budget double-din Nav-like carPC, but if you really wanted to market it, the software and support will be your problem... however, if you only market it to hobbyists without any software or support, then your market is much more limited and you'll never be able to even make a living off the endeavor.

see my thread: Plug and Play CarPC?? for more discussion on this topic.

I would caution against purchasing off of chinagrabber, rather more reputable sources.
