    Complete Car PC

A google search turned this up. Seems like a much much cheaper alternative to the Guru, but don't really want to be the first guinea pig for $900. Although for $900 it's probably more hardware than I can round up on my own. Site is a little on the shady site as well.

Maybe we could find the makers of this, get them to send you a demo for review, and then you could start carrying it if it's worth the price. I'll be the first customer as long as the sound quality isn't completely terrible or I can at least swap out the amp fairly easily.

Thanks for the suggestion. We will see what we can do about getting a sample for a forum review.

I've always wondered about those units too, but I would definitely be careful...

My cousin bought one of that site's in-dash DVD/Nav systems for around $275-$300 and it came with zero support or documentation whatsoever. It worked okay for about a month, and then the touch screen stopped working properly after that. Now it will only recognize the "hot corners" and the "gestures" to move from one screen to another, none of the regular on-screen buttons are recognized by the touch interface. So, he's stuck using the buttons on the bottom of the screen and on the remote control to control the unit... It gives him access to about 75% of the features, but Nav is all but useless because he can't enter any addresses. On top of that, a very limited selection of USB flash drives and SD cards are recognized by the unit, and all are limited to either 2GB or 4GB, so u can't have your entire media collection.

As far as the PC goes, I wouldn't expect all the drivers and software to be loaded as they show in the pictures. It may not even come with Windows XP for that price.

Very true. Yeah I am in the camp it's better to spend the money and do it right the first time. It's too bad there isn't a real brand out there like Alpine, Clarion, Pioneer, etc that could make something like this running Win7 mobile or Android.
The problem is the cost. The hardware isn't cheap, and neither is all the hours of coding and validating that would need to be done.
Making my own would be a lot of fun, just not sure I have the time.

lolo, I just brought this up in the infill G$ forum.

But that unit is a bit high for he going rates right now.

    - Universal 2Din is running mid $600 and up.
    - Some of the manufacturers are talking OEM products that can be made to order.
    - Anything under $500 seems to be CE orientated.

At the moment, I'm still playing with a few ideas regarding Chinese units.

ill give you a warning based on a sample I received a few months ago (samples are supposed to have extra quality control since their what companies base orders off of). These are absolute crap....its a 1Ghz celeron M processor that they list as a faster processor with some distributors (even though its not). I had a button fall out after just an hour of testing, the radio is separate and not at all controllable from the PC and worst of all the amp distorts if you go past about 50%. I was honestly surprised the thing didn't catch on fire while testing... Notice windows 2003 is the newest operating system they advertise..it was barely released when these things were designed.

    edit:
As a side note-if you do want to take the risk...wholesale price is $480/unit Q:3 units

Thanks for the heads up. Yeah I had already decided against it, but that pretty much seals the deal. I looked at the Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT at Fry's the other night, and it was a very nice unit. Obviously missing the PC part of things but the NAV and music interface was worthy of putting in my Protege. I was actually surprised at how low resolution and slow the interfaces for most of the cheaper double DIN head units are. Some of the cheaper ones were frustratingly so.
I think what I want more than anything is Pandora in my car. The cheapest way to do that is just get a single DIN Pioneer with AVRCP and start paying $30/mo for an data plan on my phone. Then just use the extra DIN slot for analog gauges.
