would be awesome to be able to get a key
i have got hold of the 3.4 GB image build iso from Microsoft, but the key that make it run after 30 days are DAMM hard to get if possible at all
i know there are tricks to get the same features in a normal win7, but i want the legal way.. and a license is only about 100$ if and when you can get it...
so far 29 have read... what thoughts have there been?
From what I understand, this is just something you order from microsoft - you have to call them to place an order and I don't know if there's a minimun order quantity. I also do not know if they require you to buy the embbeded tools before you can order any keys. At least this is how was done for one of the companies I worked -- they used to buy many licenses for XP embedded which is very similar licensing I hear.
you can't get keys from Microsoft but one of their partners, also you have to apply first, ie fill out a agreement form and microsoft has to countersign etc. if they do you can then order the keys from their partner, if they do not countersign then you are screwed...
you dont need the toolkit as the iso they offer as a 7-8 part download has an image build wizzard that does plenty fine for a car pc install, so you will only need the keys.
of course one could monkey arround with a normal win7 to get the embedded features in there or at least the features we need, but it's just not the right way to do it and the keys for embedded is about 100$ if you can get one the legit way :-D
no one thinks this would be great in the store?
I didn't really know that it existed..
I like the option of install to SD card though.. That could save on the cost of an SSD
And cheaper is always good..
What differences are there between it and a full version that might affect a typical user in a negative way?
Same problem as WinCE 6.0....drivers, only more so. Windows embedded 7 is the (more or less) successor to WinCE 6.0. I have tried it out on a Beagleboard and in a VM and it's got some advantages over WinCE, particularly in it's ability to handle hibernate and resume. But finding hardware drivers is even more difficult than with CE, because the rate and scope of adoption is just not there yet. Probably the best analogy is with XP and Win7 shortly after its release. Everything was supported on XP, and a good portion would run on 7, but not everything. Right now, if a piece of hardware is going to support CE/embedded at all, there will be a WinCE 6.0 driver. There is some WEC7 support, but not a lot.Quote:

That is strange the little bit of reading I did after I posted seemed to suggestion standard windows 7 drivers would work for windows embedded as well..
I don't really have a need for CE so would just stick with typical windows 7 was just interested in the embedded version if it was going to be cheaper and potentially faster without too many draw backs over the typical OS.
