    Wine & D3 / GPS

    Hi jbors and others,

Is anyone working on integrating D3 into a frontend?

NoPistonPC has already posted a working screenshot last year, so apparently it worked and was embedded and everything into his frontend... I think he stopped developing, and I wonder what he got in terms of a working prototype and what we the community can benefit from it

    Hi RoyN,
I'd like to have GPS working in PyCar/Linux. The only problem is that all existing PC based solutions are not well suited for Linux embedding or use. Wine is a good idea, but you have to carry X and everything it comes with.
I'm working on some prototypes right now. Hope to show up something in 2-3 months timeframe. It will not be based on Win solutions anyhow. Very custom built and something real cool

    Hi mate!

Can't wait to see what you'll come up with.... is it going to be exclusively for pycar or would it be possible to port it into other frontends (linux of course) with some work? I assme you will OS it, which is a start, but are you thinking of making it very dependant on Pycar or more modular?

anyways, what kind of maps are you going to base it on? I'm really interested in using something based on linux but Destinator are the only maps that are supported in Brazil (and in several other areas too)...

have you given any thought to using your own format (possibly based on SDAL or something of the sort) and the possibility of converting D3 maps into that format as a base?

Would a MFC C++ "Map Monkey Clone" be more suitable for Wine/Linux embedding than VB-based ones?

It will be something modular, easily embeddable on any os. It will be partially open sourced. There will be Python bindings at first with ability to write any other bindings.

It will be Teleatlas with ability to use Navteq.

by Teleatlas and Navteq what exactly do you mean? DVDs from Teleatlas or Navteq, or like Destinator? from what I know Destinator is Navteq, but I dunno if they have more formats I think they do...

    jbors,

sounds very cool. i started working on a GPS library last year that did its rendering via Cairo (and a custom fbdev backend) but gave up when i realized it was going to take a lot of work to achieve the visual accuracy of Destinator, iGuidance, etc... By that, I mean getting line segment end points to join correctly and drawing exits, overpasses, etc... Basically, all the little details that make the commercial apps look so nice. I can't stand half-*** rendering jobs, and I just don't have the time right now to put into the grungy details. Also, the NavTeq data i was using was pretty expensive (i was working off a sample map, but the commercial maps are not cheap).

having said all that, I am very curious how you are implementing your solution. also, how much does teleatlas and navteq data go for these days?

Also, if anyone needs help getting destinor running in wine or with integrating it into their frontend, send me a PM. as RoyN mentioned, I have been able to successfully integrate Destinator 2 into my frontend before, so I may be able to help out.

Yeah, those small things can be nasty
Why I want new solution is the ability to implement moving predictions, compensation factors, full integration with the car sensors and other things required for a trully telematics system. Also I want it to be modular and portable.
I haven't got any "official" price for Navteq or Teleatlas yet. So cannot tell how much is that.

jbors, do you have a list of areas for which maps are available in the formats you anticipate?

    cheers

I believe more or less the whole world is covered by Teleatlas and Navteq.
