Long time user of RR here. I've searched and fought with this issue for over a year, and I know others have as well, and I hoped Guino or the others might be able to help us.
In short, I use RR and I have MitchJS's Sirius SIR-ALP1 USB adapter to listen to Sirius radio. I have tried a ton of different external USB soundcards, and they all exhibit a behavior that causes me to be unable to use their optical connection into my amp (which has a TOSlink in). Here is an excerpt from some of my posts here, which I have recently also posted in Mitch's forum:
I am trying to use optical OR analog out from the Sirius adapter to my soundcard, then an optical connection from my soundcard to my amp (it has a TOSlink connector). I have tried several USB cards, but it seems like they all have a software utility to control the SPDIF out, and if it is in 44.1Khz or 48Khz out mode, I can hear my MP3s and other sounds my PC is producing, but I cannot hear anything via the SPDIF In from the Sirius Adapter. If I set the software to SPDIF In/Out (which appears to be passthru), I can hear the Sirius adapter's audio, but I cannot hear any MP3's etc.
This has left me with two options that are not at all ideal. I can either exit my frontend app and manually switch the mode using the vendor supplied utility OR I can use analog in to my soundcard and analog out from there. This is definitely noisier than it is with the optical connection based upon my tests.
Mitch basically responded that he didn't know much about carpc's, but he did suggest the Winamp Line In plugin (which I've tried and it hasn't worked for me - I suspect because RR doesn't appear to use Winamp for playback of the SAT Radio audio in such a way that it can work) and mentioned that his app SXRecorder can do it to allow for "live monitoring".
Anyway, are there any USB cards that somehow do this? If not, is there any chance RR could be modded at some point down the line to allow for it? I've donated in the past on 2 occasions, FWIW, and I would gladly do so again if someone could help me resolve this. Thanks!
