    Newbie Guide

So I recently got a Q1 Ultra Mobile PC, and since it fits perfectly in my car I thought it would nice to use it as a Car PC. So I looked around for some finger friendly programs that would work well while I'm driving, mostly just for MP3 playing and GPS stuff. Came across Streetdeck, which worked well, but $200 is flat out crazy. Finally I found Road Runner, which at first glance seems perfect.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a nice website for it that I could find (not counting Guino's own rather sparce site), only this forum. So after a good deal of hunting I looked in the FAQ section and found buried in the middle a "Install guide" sadly it basically comes down to, download it, and install it. No talk of configuration or what you need to run it, or what it can do or anything. I figure it just must be so simple that any idiot can figure it out, but I guess I'm an idiot, as I couldn't figure it out.

I went, and installed winamp, and then roadrunner, and then did a version check. Found a nice looking skin (the BMW one), and figured I was all set to go. Fired up the configurator, and set the path to my skins, look at the other settings, set the ones I understand, ignore the rest. Close the window, and then head over to RR. Sept nothing works, no skin, no gps, no music. Turns out none of my settings got saved.

I try again, finally get the skin loaded, but alas its not the right size. Back to the forum, where I find that all I need to do is change the ini file in the skin folder (ahh, how obvious). Do that and now my skin is centered, but still not taking up the whole screen. I take a break from that and then head over to the music screen, where I click a bunch of various cryptic buttons, but can't seem to get any of my music to show up. Then my battery dies and I give up.

Now here I am looking harder for a first time users guide, some sort of explanation about how what works, and really I can't find anything. I realize that RR is incredibly customizable, but that isn't an excuse for its lack of user friendlyness. And its lack of new user support. Forums are great and all, but questions get buried and even with searching it can still be incredibly hard to find the basic answers.

So is there a Newbie guide that I just somehow missed? If not I'd be happy to make up a nice little webpage home for it if someone else would be kind enough to write one.

    Hello there,

    Help File

Sometimes tons of information causes more problems than bits of information. With RR there is a ton of information. Try this help file first of all, this may help you. Also check out the installer. This has most of the up to date options within it, so will help you get started.

Have a look in the help file and search for the options you need. It can be difficult getting started, but RR is highly configurable, which is an advantage for the knowledgable and a pita for the newbs.

But don't forget, we all started where you are now, and lots of us are still around and using the software to full effect.

    Good luck

    Skin problem -
if not yet, change general.ini in your skin folder to show width=1024 show height=768
Set Road Runner display in config to default.

    Music -
make sure the path is set to where your music is. in rr config, under music, make sure you select what file type of your music (.mp3, .wma, etc.)
Register your winamp.dll file in road runner. The new config didn't register mine for some reason, and i assumed it did. Do this by click Start>Run>type in regsvr32.exe "c:\Program Files\Road Runner\winamp.dll" . A confirmation will pop up.

    Battery Problem:
Go buy battery charger with automatic shutoff from pepboy for $40. I ran my car off this for 6 hours to reinstall all software in my CarPC.

Do this and report back. Hope it helps.

I fixed the skin problem, I had set both resolutions in the general.ini file, instead of just setting one of them.

The audio problem was solved by pushing all sorts fo random button sin the music player, after awhile all of my music showed up... not sure how I did it though.

The battery isn't really a problem, and I have an inverter so I can plug it into the car for long trips. I was mearly stating that I was frustrated and didn't feel like going back inside to get the power cable.

I've gotten my problems worked out for the most part, its just been an incredibly frustrating trip. The Help file that kpjuk posted is a great start, but its lacking alot of crucial information.

q1 ultra.. that's a cool gadget... i am shopping for used one.. earlier version... hey, you think you gonna able to run RRearth with that? Let us know how it goes....

Just look around man.. there are tons of information u need to read.. I am a noob too.. and everyone goes thru same steps... Ask around, most of them are very friendly and willing to help out as you have just discovered... There are tons of toys.. Might as well get used to reading now if you want ur Q1 to be just more than mp3 and gps tool.... Just look in the Plugin forum and see what amazing things peple are doing with this....

The guide, i can't say it's one of the most intuitive ones, but, RR documentation and skin reame file should be adaquate enuf to give u a good start, then ask around... Don't forget, this is free... that says it all... good or not, anything people spent their own time and effort to share, we should feel lucky to have access to them... cuz it's better than nothing...

Google earth runs fine on the Q1 Ultra. Might not on the regular Q1 though.

This is ceritnly true, but I feel bad for the folks that have worked so hard on the software, that so few people ever get to use, because the documentation is so poorly organized thats its a massive task to learn how to work it.

One thing that is important to understand is that RR is really more of a skin/UI development tool. If you want everything perfect, you are probably going to have to learn how to edit RR skins. An RR skin is much more than a "skin". Each screen is 100% configurable in every way, not just in graphics. There can be anywhere from 3 to 100+ screens in a single skin. RR is the ultimate front-end for anyone that is willing to edit/code/maintain their own skin. If you want it to work out of the box, there are only a few skins I would suggest (ones with full installers and help files such as DigitalFX or LSXVoid).

^^.. u know most of programmers I know hate doing documentation.. that's against their nature... they code, they code and they code... They don't write papers.. ^^ They only do it cuz other parties are after their ***.. ^^

Newb77, that's a very good point... Sorta like RR being a framework... Some of the skins are very advanced, somewhat like RR's little brother.. especially those flash based ones...

One of the problems I've had as a newbie is finding broken links - for example - "This site for the latest downloads is RR Downloads.net which is also mirrored at www.kompassist.co.uk" are both broken.

Could someone please provide a link to the installer for the latest version of RR?

I'm also working on a recently acquired Q1U (Vista) and am curious about your "inverter". Could you shed some light on what/where, etc?

    Thanks!
