I did that (see post #11). It does solve a couple of issues.

I've seen other posts here and in the GPS forum that all basically state the same problem... Mobile PC just likes to sit on top.

I'm having some success with covering parts of it with a simple OSK that looks like a menu skin. OSKs seem to be the only thing that will sit on top of Mobile PC and still allow the user to interact with it. It's a cheesy solution, but it'll keep me going until a clever skinner or programmer starts digging into it. I guess we wait until Mobile PC becomes more popular.

I'm really liking this garmin software

I'm having a play around with embedding it and getting an OSK to work with it.
here's what i got so far using EL CAMINO's Overlay plugin

yeah me too. first look it is not so impressive (map graphics) and no 3d (compared to igo) but it does what a navigation system needs to do: clear and simple instructions on screen and voice. love it.

where did you get that overlay thing. can you post your osk. have the default mc2.0 but covers all the screen and backspace is not working

Got Garmin PC. Using DFX 3.0 (slammin skin). Working the small kinks out now. Watching this thread like a hawk. I live in SC and haven't insalled yet cause its to dang hot. Keep up the great work guys hope you'll have it figured out soon can't wait to have ALL my system up and running.

no 3d? mine shows 3d, unless it's something else you're talking about...but yeah...map graphics suck compared to iG. It picked better routes than iG though, I just got back from a trip to Houston. Last time I made the trip and used iG it took nearly 14 hours. Used Garmin and shaved off 2 hours. Took me through the middle of nowheresville with no cell service and no sign of civilization...but it got me there faster and that's good in my book.

I'm in the middle of making this overlay. It's working 100% yet, so i ain't gona send it off yet.

EDIT: need some help with the OSK
to start with i was just using the standard OSK skin.ini which uses the K button
but it doesnt seem to be sending the letter to garmin.
could i use a a "sendkey;%" command? do i also need to add a "focus" to it? so garmin is in focus?

Well I was able to get it to embed in to DFX. It will be an option in the next release.

There are quite a few things I do not like about Garmin over iG so far.

- No Full screen
- Locked to a minimum of 800 Pixels wide.
- The voice is not as good as iG4
- Tons of presses to get to something, and no way to jump directly like when using the iG scripts.
- Roads and such are way to large to see any real detail as mentioned above.
- No way to change colors on the map, roads, fonts ect
- Does not close nicely with RR. Also you can not minimize RR if Garmin is embedded.


I DO however LOVE the POI searching! Something iGuidance has been severely lacking in since the beginning. With Garmin, if you want to find a Target store for instance, type target, and it will appear in the list, click it and the stores are displayed from closest to farthest.

Here is a screen capture, if you are wondering where the top bar is, its actually kind of useless really, so I just moved the app area off the top of the screen, so more map is visible.

john, that is pretty clever... how you pushed up the top bar so, it won't be visible..

I am with you all the way... Only thing i heard good thing about this is that it does good job with routing..

I use both right now. When I get into a populated area, I switch to iG as it displays more info on the map such as POI's and roadnames.

I did notice that you can change the speed of the Garmin voice via the Speech control panel, but you can't change the actual voice...which sucks. Haven't tried the same with iG.

I guess you can't complain for $60 though... iG is $100+
