Well here we go again .. .this is the exact type of cr*p that lots of us were talking about in one or two other posts .. not too long ago. I have to say I am in total agreement with enforcer on this one having to have .Net installed is just a waste of time - particularly for those of us with low speced pc's. We now will have half of the RR user base go down the road of installing .NET and having these DLL's reg'ed for code that we will never use - EVER ! And before anyone else mentions that "it's a programming thing" - I do understand what he means, but I still disagree with having to have .NET installed just to listen to my music !
enforcer, VB6 isnt drop in place!!
WHAT about VB6 RUNTIME LIBS..
try running RR without the VB RUNTIME...
your logic is flawed...
you know, since the focus HERE is XM/SIRIUS/HD Radio and you use NONE of these, you dont need to bother... but the bug fixes that are also done in this build you will be without
and dont argue vb6runtime is smaller, of course it is, vb6 is OLD OLD OLD, .net does SO much more
yes technically u could pick and choose what parts of .net framework you want to put on your pc
and make is smaller.
mitch
Boy you really cant please everyone can ya? The whole purpose of this is to merge multiple versions of RR into one rock solid build. And dont get it confused, it IS rock solid. Alot of people have put alot of work into it and its the most stable release in quite sometime. But instead of seeing it for what it is we have people saying they dont want to upgrade to .net EVEN if it has ZERO affect on the performance of the PC with OR without RR running. So now they're will STILL be multiple versions and to boot there will now be MULTIPLE plugin formats. So all the organization and plugin management plugins and UPDATED installers will now wait because people dont want to "conform". Its ridiculous
Yes, I am aware of the VB6 runtimes, but they are standard ones that are used throughout a lot of programs that use VB6 so I have no issue with those.
Hell even with my programs I have to distribute some of them, but then they only need to be installed if someone wants my plugins to work.
Yes VB6 is old old old (how many did you put?) but then (according to most people here) so am I.
But if I wanted a .net fromtend I would go out a get Centrafuse or SD NOT RoadRunner.
I USE roadRunner because it is in VB6.
Well yes thanks for the corrections, but most of those worked in previous editions and were broken in adding some other things.
I would have preferred a main program with the fixes and your NEW additions as an external piece of code that can be added if required.
And that I see as the main problem, you don't use RR, you don't even have a CarPC, so why the hell are you making changes to the main code or RR, you can't understand what we, who use it, develop for it want.
very good work mitch, got to use it in my car.. very very good. already had 2.0 .net (who doesn't these days?) and it went great! thanks for the update and all the great support for something you don't even use. :-)! thanks again!
I'm sorry Sonic, but if I wanted to have to "conform" just for my hobbie, I'd go out and buy something from Microsoft, where I would have no choice but to install .NET, Visual Studio 2008 and most probalby upgrade my CarPC to Vista just to listen to my music.
I wonder what would be the answer if we asked members for your side of the pond to just "conform" ... I can only imagine sme of the responses !
I understand where you guys across the pond are coming from, if you are never going to use these features why install them? The simple answer is: don't use the newest version. Use the 11/07 release if all you need is MP3, VID, and GPS and some plugin's. Or go back even further, there are many great and stable RR releases from the past. SO why install the dependencies? Its because RR is the only open source app I know of to combine all 3 radio sources into a fast and stable interface, not to mention for free. It is what the newer code base is going to provide, if you want the current upgraded RR to work then it needs to work the way it was designed and programmed to work - with the ability to run HD/XM/Sirius. If you don't use them (or can't; depending on your location) its not going to slow RR down. Part of having a car PC is the ability to tune RADIO, clear, loud and quickly switch between sources. Radio has always been a "standard" in cars worldwide so having a PC installed should not limit that.
Sorry to anyone who does not like the changes but this is the direction the project is headed. If you would like to see things happen differently by all means add some code and some time on the project, all the developers spend hours, days, weeks, months making this stuff happen. The app is written by people not computers.
In closing I would like to iterate that my car system is a via m10000 w/512mb ram. It has a 1gb SanDisk compact flash for booting, and I run a stripped XP, .NET, -9-9-08 RR, + all my programs on it without issue and about 150mb to spare. So please lets keep the thread clean of complaining, and see just how far we can push RR :) Sorry for people that don't have access to the good radio, but we do here in America and we are still the biggest exporter of IDEAS in the entire world.
that last line is going to ignite a war here...
