fyi, Application Data directory is for data stored/used by the application BUT not edited/viewed outside the application

since we all like to mess with our skins and configs and such... I felt it best to store it in a location with easy access
    -Thanks

Not trying to be a stickler here... but whats the point in this new standard? Other than the idea that vista supports it. Is RR.ini gonna be in a user folder at some point. Its just odd to me that we finally get plugins centralized in select places and now we're going to move the settings files elsewhere.

Well, its really a two fault part. Starting with XP, any/all program settings were NOT supposed to be stored in the program files folder which shows b/c XP had created the Application Data folder in the first place. Its just that lazy/sloppy programs used the apps folder to store it in. And MS decided to push much harder to get coders to follow the OS guide lines. And why the whole reason that using the std(legecy) install option caused lots of issues when a app tries to write something in the program files folder. And unfortunitly, we sorta have to point some blame at cough..The G man..( Sorry G )

Heck, I'll even admit that I had no idea what OS guide lines should have been followed, otherwise I would have followed with all my older apps.

I'm sure mitch will re-chime in and also point this out.

Well in that case any plugin information stored should only be adjusted by the plugin (or a separate config program) and not manually (as I go through my plugins and update I will be making sure this is what happens.

Also rr.ini shouldn't now be edited manually as we have RRConfig, (if anyone thinks they are clever enough to start editing rr.ini themselves they should be able to unhide folders)

So if we are following proper programming standards, stick the files in the application data directory where it is supposed to go, not an arbitrary chosen folder by you.

So the only things likely to be edited manually are skin files, so are we now going to have to have them in the profile?

    No, I didn't think so.

I hate to say this but I kind of agree, although not the currently chosen location (see above), more and more people are going to be using vista or windows 7 and won't be able to access the program files locations, so moving them to the proper place is a good idea, and having looked at the latest plugin example it shouldn't be too difficult for us to implement (just wish they would consult the people it affects before doing it).

Doing the CF plugins has made me see the reasoning behind it.

BTW that's bull, we tried to set up some standards for plugins and you just run straight over them with a steam roller, not paying any attention or even consulting with those trying to set some standards.

Therefore I think you should outline what you see as the standards and invite opinion from current and future developers.

yes, SKINS are in the PROFILE storage, since they are USER modded files
and also have some .inis involed

there is NO 100% way to enforce (hehe) any standard due to VB6 legacy language
    with no interfaces

RULE #1 is so simple, NO WRITEABLE DATA belongs in the "PROGRAM FILES" directory!

mydocuments is perfectly allowed by Microsoft standards to save program data
this allows for simplified backup too...
just install visual studio 2005/2008 and take a look what microsoft puts there!

as for standards, these are all GUIDELINES, that should be followed
if you write a plugin and save data in program files, dont expect it to work on win7 or vista, it will get virtualized and written in a differnt location, which is OK in some cases
    -Thanks

and this isnt BULL, im still waiting for someone to write up a document on plugins... documentation leads to guidelines for standards

in profile mode, rr.ini is in the profile directory

everything is quite well organized, every plugin knows where its data is
(course the plugin has to be using the TOOLS it has be given)
(the SDK is very weak, and not contracted)

    nothing has moved in MONTHS!
