And for every new type of police radar, there's a new detector for it, still doesn't make speeding legal...

You're right, so they should install warnings in the car that flash bright on the windshield when you go over the speed limit. Did I get the analogy close?

    Edit: *mandatory warnings.

That's simple actually.. RR has no time-limit and has no feature-limit, so there's no reason/incentive to "hack" it or "defeat" anything... the reminder is there merely so we'd know when/if someone used it in a commercial product without authorization.

Why would somebody put hours and hours into a software to protect it when it is free from the beginning? I THINK YOU ARE MISSING THE BOAT, HOPE YOU CAN SWIM. Don't like it....don't download it for FREE!!!!. Pay for Centrafuse or StreetDeck and be happy with it.

I think you're missing the point too.

The point is this. The nag is a stupid idea that's very annoying. Who gives a flying **** if it's free or not, the purpose of the software is for people to use it right? And I'm voicing my concern that it's not usable to me. Wtf is wrong with you people...

I love all the thoughtless replies of "it's free, don't like it get something else". What a stupid take on free software. I use ubuntu. It's free. When I have a problem with it, I tell someone. What happens? Usually it gets fixed. Couldn't compile madwifi drivers on a 64-bit install of ubuntu. I complained on a message board. What happened? Omg they FIXED it. Wow... free software and they listened to my concern?! How strange a concept...

Here's the problem. You guys are taking a minor inconvenience that I have with my CarPC and blowing it up into a major annoyance. Yes it is my problem, yes my PC doesn't keep time... but it would still work just fine and I still would be just as happy as I used to be if the nag screen was gone.

I would think that this wouldn't be a good idea for your custom hardware as well... what happens when their cmos battery dies, or their machine screws up with the wrong date/time? It just seems to me that there would be better ways to combat unauthorized usage.

Pay attention to what you're saying: "it's not usable to me" -- so tell me, what's not usable about it ? -- is it broken ? is it missing some feature/function ? does it quit running or damages your computer files or parts ? those are things I would consider before saying something is "not usable", unless it's just a matter of choice... just like I CHOOSE not to use itunes because (despite it being a nice piece of work) it is just too messy for me.. doesn't mean it's not usable, I just choose not to use it... so I could CHOOSE to say "it's not usable", but that being based only on choice, it not only isn't fair but there's just nothing that anyone could say to change my mind..

You have a broken hardware which you choose to not fix (or can't fix for a reason or another) -- I can't possibly support broken hardware when I can barely keep up with what actually works. So, since your date already doesn't work, why don't you just put a .bat file on your startup folder to set the date of the computer to the same date of release of RR ? RR won't complain anymore and it'll be the end of that.

Obviously, there's no reminder about the software being FREE if the software is a COMMERCIAL version (running in our custom hardware). There's also no point in copying the commercial version of the software into another machine since it's tailored specifically to work with that custom hardware, and as such, very likely will not work on any other hardware.

I managed to stay out of the discussion until now but my pure hatred for applications that inconvenience the user is overwhelming.

I have to say something about everyone's argument that it's free........it isn't free, it's only free of charge. It's not free of my time nor my frustration which are infinitely more expensive than my money. The first thing I check to see if I want to buy something is whether or not it's easy and fast to obtain. If I have to register on a bunch of sites or provide details that don't seem required or sit down and concentrate on figuring out a website, then I choose not to purchase the product. Even if that product is free, I still choose not to purchase it because it's already wasting my time and my mood.

It's like if gas is cheaper on the other side of the road but it's a divided highway and I'd have to take an exit to get to it, then I'm not taking it. I'll gladly pay more for gas if it saves me time and hassle in the process, so therefore I choose not to go through the misery of getting this free product at the expense of my time and frustration.

Secondly, a part of the reason is also because of the principle. I own online stores, one is an online skate/clothing shop and I raked through that shop making sure everything was easy to use, the checkout process is simple and I modified some of the required information because it was just stupid. I even added a plugin that let the user checkout WITHOUT creating an account......fancy that.......an e-commerce owner taking care of his patrons. I know the difference is that I get paid and you don't, however I would still get paid regardless because they would still buy my product either way. The difference is I take the effort to make these changes for my customers without seeing any return on that invested time, just the satisfaction that I'm not being hypocritical.

I hope I've helped you see that it doesn't matter at all if it's free or not free, the problem people have is the annoyance. And I (we?) will not put up with it* simply for that.

    * I unfortunately do put up with it but only until the major car show in June. After that it's balls out and I'll probably go with OpenICE, making my fourth and final computer a Linux box.
