QUESTIONS: How do I setup my plugins without duplicating them in the individual skin directories? What directions would you give to potential skin developers to maintain this standardization? Please recap and summarize what other standardization efforts have been accomplished and/or are in the works?

I currently have renamed the TLBINF32.DLL file so no global plugins get loaded and rely on the "x,pluginname" within the MENU.SKIN. That's going backward not forward.

    HELP!
Currently, there are three methods of loading plugins:
    $rrpath$Plugins\
    $skinpath$Plugins\
    X,Plugin in menu.skin

If you have a plugin used in more than one skin (Skintool, MP3Art, RRExtended, RRMedia-once it gets updated, Movietimes, Traffic Cams, etc.), the thought is that it would be located in the $rrpath$Plugins\ folder so that it is loaded globally.

Skin specific plugins should be loaded w/ the $skinpath$Plugins\ and will only be loaded if that skin is selected.

There is also a plugin manager skin I've seen floating around, but have yet to see an example of that allows the user to turn on/off available plugins.

So my suggestion to you G is that look thru your all your plugins, and move commonly used ones into the $rrpath$\Plugins folder so you minimize duplicates. FYI, RR will not load duplicate plugins.

Granted, if the skin you're using doesn't support a plugin feature (i.e. MovieTimes), RR will still load the plugin, but the skin just won't access the features.

    Hope that helps.

    Do I understand this correctly?

For example, plugin.dll is located in two different skin plugin directories.

Only one skin will be able to load the plugin when the skin is loaded?

Im X64 vista, and it has NO issues, NOW IM with UAC OFF!!!!

in anycase, that would be the same as "run as admin"
unless something is blocking the file that is running in the temporary folder
u might need to look into that...
i cant even tell you what could be running in a temp folder as i dont ask for anything in a temp folder, but it could be inno symantics, you could LOG the installation, that would help... look for INNO command line switches
    prob just /log

ALSO u are a good canidate for the NEW PROFILE MODE RR!!!
didnt u and i hook up with that?

Tried running it with admin rights and in WinXP SP2 compatibility mode.

The setup runs fine on my WinXP SP3 VirtualPC installation.

no, both skins will LOAD the plug-in, but it ACTUALLY only loads from the directory that it is REGISTERED in, the dupped .dll would be what a call a GHOST .dll

there, but technically not use by WINDOWS OS, BUT it does tell RR to load it!!!!! and thats whats important

    boy we off topic

i believe whats meant is plugin.dll cannot be registered in two seperate locations. So if plugin.dll exists in two different skin plugin folders, the plugin will be loaded regardless of which skin is loaded.. BUT it will be loaded from the last registered location.

EDIT- Too late but same thing as what mitch is saying.

I think that with the whole PI thing, is that unless we firmly put our feet down and say these xx are the new standards without being backwards compatiable then we might have a chance that there would be a standard to be followed. The only downside is that all PI authors would have to be contacted and told they need to update their's to this new standard otherwise it won't work/load.
Then for any PI's that the author's either can't be contacted, or don't want to update, then someone else would have to recreate that plugin using the new standards.

i think this would actually be the best way to handle it. Lets face it.. there arent many plugin creators that arent still actively making plugins. I can think of 2 or 3 completed plugins that no longer appear to be supported.
