XM will not unmute after standby

When comming out of standby, the XM box will not unmute and send audio out of it's audio jacks. RR is unmuting the line-in fine, I tested it by unplugging the XM box and plugging in another audio source, and the test audio comes through line-in just fine. Also, it appears the XM box is communicating with RR normally with no error messages and all XM channels load and appear normal in RR, with the programs showing and changing, and I can change stations like normal, so I feel RR is talking to XM just fine.

I can't seem to do anything to make it unmute, restarting RR, rebooting the PC, cycling power on XM, or any combination. The only way I can get the XM to unmute itself is to re-install RR. Then it works fine for several standby cycles, and then the XM box mysteriously mutes itself and won't unmute. When it does initially work, the RR volume and mute buttons work fine with XM and all other audio sources.

I just installed a new laptop (ASUS EEEPC) for my carputer, upgraded FROM Vista to XP, and updated my RR, which was an older 2007 version. I also added a USB sound card, but I don't think this is the problem, since I can plug audio into the USB soundcard from another source, and it's fine. Before the computer change and RR update, everything had been fine, running for a couple years.

Help, this is about to make me nuts!


Edit - Just thinking, is there a chance it's my XM box? I had it off for a few months, and I had to do a reactivation to make it work. But all that seemed to be fine, until it quit unmuting. I'm also thinking the problem may only occur when XM was active when it went into standby. Could this be some kind of inverted mute/unmute problem? I think I will go test for that. Nope, no audio ever out of the XM box, unless I start over and reload the RR software. Then the cycle repeats...

Update - What is the MJS gadgets? I ran through the new RRConfig, and I see something for the MJS for radio. Do I need to change something here? Is there anything that I need to do different for XM than with the old RR?

prob no issue here, xm is quite well tested....

2007 version of XM, is completely differnt than what it is in RideRunner, but its been in RideRunner for monts and monts, and even in some 2008 versions of RoadRunner

course after a resume, the radio is repowered on, and it doesnt power on muted... there for i wouldnt ask it to unmute...
which brings up a question, what xm tuner do u got? xmd1000? with some weirdo interface?
but switching sources would mute it, then coming back to xm would unmute..

u do know there is a RR command "xmmute"
that toggles the XM Mute, type it, with the qoutes....
but in anycase, XM is unmuted when it is selected, and its selected after u resume from sleep, a debug log will show all...

I'll get debug files and post. I set RR to hibernate aware int he RRconfig program. Had it that way from the start.

My XM box is not the XMPCR, I think it is the XMD1000, but I will verify. I got it in early 2006 when I first started my carputer project. That is intersting about it not powering up muted. I put a set of PC amp/speaker direct on the XM box's output, and never got any audio, but I'm not sure that I cycled power on it. I will do that too.

Thanks for the help. This was particularly disappointing, as I was so very close to 100% functionality with the new PC, and I was very impressed with how things were working. The improvements in XM were obvious to me, after having it with the old version for a couple years.

I thought I was on to something. I was finally able to get the XM to unmute by completely powering down everything, disconnecting everything from the PC, then starting back up. I came to the realization that my PC is keeping power on the USB when in standby, and that was keeping the XM USB-RS-232 converter powered up, even though the XM box itself had no power. If I dropped power to everything, then brought PC out of standby, then started RR, XM would unmute and work great. I tested this by cycling into standby and back out a few times, pulling the USB once it was asleep, and ensuring the XM was powered off. It worked several times, but then finally went back to where it is stuck with XM muted, and nothing I am doing will get it unmuted right now. This is really wierd. Surely I'm missing something really simple here.


I have a general question: When RR is talking XM protocol to the XM box, specifically when selecting a new channel, is there a hand-shake, or is it one way? Reason I asked, is it seems strange that RR can change the XM channels, see the song updates, and everything appears to work normal, but the XM won't unmute. So I'm wondering if the channel change command to the XM is one way, and it just looks like it's working right, but it's not really? I know it sounds crazy, I'm just trying to understand more about how the XM serial protocol works. I can put an RS-232 protocol analyzer on the line and watch the exchange, but surely won't need to.

My XM is connected through a USB to RS-232 serial adapter and through a simple cable that converts the RS-232 from a DB9 connector to a little DIN connector that connects to the XM box. This is the exact same converter, cable and connections I have used for years with no problems.

so if ur computer it triggered to go to sleep, by the ignition KEY
and u wired IGNITION to the XM Radio as power...

My PC power and XM power are from the same source. They both are 12VDC, fed from a Carnetix P2140, from it's primary output. It's set to start on ignition, which sends ACPI to the PC's (laptops) power button, and brings it out of standby. So the XM gets power exactly when the PC does, and then in 2 seconds the ACPI signals the PC to wakeup. On shutdown, ignition triggers the shutdown sequence on the Carnetix P2140, which waits a few seconds, then sends ACPI to put the PC into sleep, which takes about 10 sconds, and then about 45 seconds later, the P2140 shuts down primary power to the PC and XM. However, the PC is keeping the USB lines powered during sleep, from it's own battery. This is what I thought was causing the problem earlier, but I'm not so sure now.
