    surround in car

how do you manage to have 5.1 sound in your car? i have yet to find any speaker settings in RR so i thought it would be better to ask

i could place a center speaker in my car but i remember that at home when the surround wave began you could do a "phantom" setting for the speaker that placed the center channel info in the front speakers.. is that still doable in software?

the center speaker i have in mind ¨would be something like a fabricated box sitting on the tunnel that carries the transmission axle to the rear axle... this box would also hold dvd drive and a few other small bits... but then again i need a good amp... i'm going for a 6 channel type but i have a hard time finding one that can do 5*100watt + 200 watt for the sub.. i would rather have one amp than 2 or 3

    but give some input :-)

This is what most Car PC setups have. The set the card to 5.1, but then have the center as a phantom. There is alot of debate whether its better to have a real center or phantom. I prefered to have a real center and I notice a difference.

My setup is to the extreme and I went for 7.1, and I reallllllllly hear a difference. I also have other speakers setup too, like for phone and for head phone, all which need amps.

Amp 1: 4 channel, for door speakers
Amp 2: 4 channel, for third row speakers, phone speaker, and center speaker
Amp 3: 1 channel, for Sub
Amp 4: 2 channel, for headphone jacks (6 jacks, one for each passenger).

i'm going for 5.1. our car is a small peugeot 106 so 7.1 would be way overkill but absolute doable...

how is phantom done? i have never seen it before

and how do i select whatever i want to hear DTS or DD when i watch a movie in RR ?

i do not know how other companies do it, but with SoundBlaster (X-Fi XtremeGamer) you simply turn the center channel off and it will automatically pump center into the front left and front right.

As far a DTS and DD, it all depends on what RR uses and the files. If the file has the DTS, DD built into it, and the media player recognizes it, it will play DTS, DD.

Im kind of a newb, but when you say DD = Dolby Digital, DTS = Dolby Theater Surround?

PS: I do not know much about RR because I am a Centrafuse user, but if I am not mistaken, RR uses Win Amp? So it should have DD, DTS decoding.

Hi and thanks for the fast answer

DD is short for dolby digital and DTS is short for Digital Theater Systems.. 2 of the biggetst companies, i prefer DTS over DD as the sound is better

I have hacked a laptop (medion md98300) so that the lcd comes off, for now i have the panel standing on the table supported by a stack of old dvd's but in the end i will convert the lvds output to vga and use it for dual monitor in the car if i need that

only problem is that the laptop only support 2, 4 or 6 speakers... and no option for phantom, but i guess that building a small box on top of the tunnel in the floor and fit 2 speakers pointing each way would be the best option.. i'm going to have a dvd drive there anyway along with some cooling control.. the laptop is going in a box on the back of the rear seat and the box will be insulated on the inside with something that we in denmark call "flamingo" it's used in construction to insulate concrete floors from the bare ground... so thats why i need to put some fan control stuff up front...

only thing left is how to control what sound track on the dvd i listen to... in the dvd menu you can normal select what you want before starting the menu... but in vlc and powerdvd there are some menu settings for your speaker setup along with other stuff.. i have not seen that in RR even thou it has a vlc plugin.. are there any alternatives that gives a little more control? any experts out there?

6 speakers is the setup you would use. Front right, front left, rear right, rear left, center, then SUB... That makes 6 speakers.

i had the same idea... but only i would make it under the dash near the drivers right foot.. like an extension downwards

for those who have not seen an 106 from the inside here is a pic http://designercars.dk/biler/Peugeot-model-309.jpg

it might not look like much but i should be able to fit a speaker consol under the main part of the dash and the center console that holds the shifter and 2 buttons for seat heat
