    streetdeck as navigation in RR

Dont flame me just yet, SD is a good navigation app from what I can tell (works fine for me) but doesnt have nearly the support that RR does, plugins, HDRadio (without a error on first launch) and such. So I was thinking my only complaint with RR is there is no integration of navigation, I know you can embed other apps but cant get directions or other info on any other screens, ie.. radio, satalite. I know that there are very few nav apps that have a SDK that dont cost $5K for the SDK. So finaly to the point, SD is 100$ and it has a SDK and COM access to and from (maybe wrong there) SD wich should give RR access to the driving directions and other info from SD. What do you think? Am I understanding the SDK part wrong? I am not a programmer by any means and dont even know were to start to do this but, what are you thoughts?

Your line of thinking is actually good.... BUT, trying to use the COM interface that was written for SD would be sketchy legal wise to say the least.

If one actually owned SD, I am not sure how that would work legally either, as you are still trying to get info from SD to use in another Front End.

Thanks for the responce, I do own it but I guess I could always ask Chuk (I think thats his name) what he thinks. I did buy it and I am not looking to hack it in anyway. Just interface it with another front end.

    Thanks again

You could ask chuck (yes thats his name)...but legally you have every right to use the streetdeck nav in another application as long as you paid for it. Since your using it with road runner all your really doing is embedding an application.

Keep in mind though from someone very active with streetdeck (check my name on the forums there) I would rate the nav 2/10...try finding a POI-enough said.

Generally, a SDK license is for them to use it on their own products. Even if thay may be available to other applications in the same machine after installed. Some SDKs make sure unauthorized use will not happen by providing some sort of "KEY" the application needs to pass to the SDK while running (so application without the key would have no/limited functionality). Even if it works fine, it would not be a "legal" way of doing it, unless nothing in the SDK license forbids using it in that manner.

You can however (without a doubt) run SD inside/paralell to RR to provide the Nav features you want, without worrying about legal implications as long as you don't hack/modify the original application -- which is generally the way RR embeds other applications. If you have multiple monitors you could just run it on one monitor and RR in the other, or you can try to run SD in GDI mode and embed it in RR -- which I never tried but could work.

Regarding the NAV features, I'd say if you have internet in the car, the GE plugin can do a great job for nav+routing+imaging. If you don't have internet in the car, then the SD Nav features would be comparable to just about any other nav software with only street maps (Sygic, iGo, iGuidance, Mappoint, etc)

If streetdeck had a GDI mode.... It runs natively using DirectX... Supposedly it can also run with OpenGL but i've never heard of anyone getting that to work. You would need to do some hacking to clip the directX draw surface to an area in roadrunner.

I was thinking more about using it as a true integrated nav rather than just embedding it, I was using rr with Garmin and both apps are great but they are both technically separate. I really want rr's features but with SD's level of integration of nav and the other features.

JustChat_1 I am very familiar with your contributions and am very appreciative, how is the bomzbox replacement DLL for visteon doing?

Well if you want something that integrated you can take a look at the deCarta navigation SDK. StreetDeck navigation is just a re-branded version of their software. I'm not sure what the license agreement is between StreetDeck and deCarta so I cant tell you for sure if you can use their SDK directly but I would think not.

To be honest my recommendation for what your looking for would be to try out a front end like revFE...or Open Mobile in about a month (right now we haven't gotten to the navigation part). But seeing as this is a road runner forum it's probably not the best place to advertise so i'll leave it open if they have any suggestions.

To be honest i've moved away from streetdeck although the source code for the visteon is available for anyone who wants. It took chuck over 4 months for one small change to the api and he still has yet to deliver on changes promised over 8 months ago. This combined with things like the 700,000 POI's (compared to 10+million from commercial Nav software) has been very frustrating to say the least.

From what I heard,at least the earlier versions had a GDI mode: (Read post #3 specifically)

From their wiki, seems like there's some sort of embed support on it as well:

Good find!!-looks like streetdeck can clip itself to a window...only thing to keep in mind is its still drawing with directx in that so it will draw on top of whatever is located in those bounds.

As far as GDI mode-it looks like it didn't make it to version 2 I just tried.
