    Boomzbox and Riderunner, hissing and static

    Continuing this thread here because this is a more appropriate forum:

    Just installed my boomzbox HD radio. It works fine using the boomzbox software, very clear sound. However, when I use RR to listen, at any time I will get alot of background static, hissing, and what sounds like a digital transmission. This can occur whether I am listening to Music (mp3), or the radio itself. Once it begins, it doesn't stop whether I switch to music or hd radio, it just continues going. When listening to radio, it sounds as if it interrupts the radio signal. When listening to music, it is just in the background, not interrupting. As soon as I remove the tuner from USB, it stops. As soon as I exit RR, it stops. I'm fairly convinced it's not a hardware or interference issue because this does NOT happen when using the Boomzbox HD software itself. I can listen to the radio indefinitely without the static coming on using boomzbox software. Using RR, the static will occur in seconds after beginning listening to music or radio, if not then within a minute or two. It is unusable.
    I wonder if this is something to do with the mixer settings?
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Also RR doesnt PROCESS AUDIO EVER.. it relies on 3rd party sw, winamp example
    for radios, and in this case, the Radio Module has Audio capture code
    same EXACT code as in boomzbox hd Software

    check in rr.ini

    radioline=0

    when using the boomzboxhd tuner, that would be the correct setting

    and if NOT using winamp line in plugin, and you're prob not

    your settings should look close to:

    Code:
    [Radio]
    radio=HDRadio
    allowallfreqs=false
    radioline=0
    uselineinplugin=false
    lineinpar=line://preset=HDRadio,title=Radio
    uselineinsingleinstance=false
    RadioPort=3
    HDRadioType=Mp3Car
    -Thanks

    Well I tried your settings and no luck. Mine were already pretty similar.

    I've done a bunch of troubleshooting and here is my conclusion:

    Boomzbox plugged in USB and turned on by RideRunner (click of the relay): random buzzing, hissing, "digital noises" in the background whether listening to radio, mp3, or nothing at all.

    • Mute sound in RR and it stops
    • Exit RideRunner and it stops (tuner clicks off).
    • Pull 12V supply plug from the boomzbox, buzzing keeps going.
    • Pull USB, buzzing stops.
    • Disable HDradio in RRconfig so that when RR starts it doesn't click on the relay in the boomzbox and I don't get any noises.

    So it sounds like maybe a grounding issue, right? well use boomzbox hd standalone interface and NONE of this happens. I waited for minutes and no luck. So this is what baffles me. Within seconds of using RideRunner I get all sorts of background noise.

    I've pulled all my USB devices, unplugged my touchscreen, everything to rule out crosstalk, no luck. I've tried to run Winamp, iGuidance in parallel with standalone boomzbox HD player outside of RR and can't reproduce it.

    There's something going on with RR that is screwing things up, I can't find it it's driving me nuts.

    Only times I've seen hissing/static noise myself in the past was with some silly on-board sound cards that caused interference in their own CD/Aux inputs -- EVEN WHEN NOTHING WAS PLUGGED ON THEM. Muting those lines helped on some cases. The only thing I can recommend is to minimize RR, open the WINDOWS mixer and try playing with mute/volume settings in there to try and define where this is coming from. This could be as simple as the recording source being the "Mix" of all inputs instead of only the input of the radio.

    I've already tried it but I'll play around with it some more. IIRC windows sound mixer doesn't always show all the volume controls unless you check box them and I forgot to go through all the hidden ones.

    I'm using an Intel D945GCLF2 onboard sound.

    I had same board before and there was lots of issues, like probs with usb devices, funny noises from onboard sound. Now it's in trash which is right place for that board.

    Guino: I muted all other devices, no luck.

    Dartman_71: I would think it is the board but it demonstrates to work completely fine outside of RR.

    OK, here is my last troubleshoot that really points at RR HD radio module or whatever it might be called:

    Disable HD radio in RRconfig.
    Start RR.
    Play music, plays fine, no static.
    Minimize RR, start HD boomzbox software. Tuner turns on and radio plays fine. No static. They can peacefully coexist.

    Now close everything. open RRconfig reconfigure RR to use HD radio. Choose Boomzbox HD, the radio com port (I've tried many different ones btw), and line in plugin disabled (whatever that other option is can't remember right now).
    now run RR and we're controlling boomzbox through the front end. at some point static will start whether it's music or radio. when it happens to be the radio, it sounds choppy. when I switch to music the static is attenuated but it doesn't interrupt the mp3 music, it's just noise in background. The static can be described as a digital noise, like it's picking up some digital transmission.

    What really gets me is I can't reproduce this outside of RR with all the same programs running. I also can't reproduce it by playing HD radio with boomzbox player while running RR with HD radio module disabled. To me, that really points at the HDRadio code in RR, but forgive me because I don't really know how all this is coded.

    MitchJS: Are we 100% sure the RR radio code is the same as boomzbox player?

    My only working solution now is to launch boomzbox hd player from RR, (and stop all other media playing) but I'm not sure that will work well as boomzbox player takes up the full touch screen, need to look into skinning it smaller (if that's even possible) so I can at least switch back to RR easily with my bottom buttons.

    When you say "Digital noise" do you mean something like when you put a cellphone next to a computer, and you hear the interference through the speakers.... Click click click Buzzzz kinda thing hahah sorry, hard to describe with text alone.

    If so, it may be some sort of interference from the circuitry in the radio, and "grounding" the radio into the USB port, is just carrying the signal to the computer.

    Its strange, I know, but I would try putting a USB hub in between the radio and the PC. You still have a connection through the hub, but the hub may do the processing of the signal, and not "carry" it to the PC. It may or may not do anything, but everything is worth a shot while trouble shooting it.

    ramrod, i dont think your solution is good
    please attach rr.ini to this thread, so i can double check..

    LIKE I SAID BEFORE, RR code and BoomzBox HD software audio capture code is identical!

    im gonna need you possible to record the audio... if u can...
    NO one else has this issue

    choppy audio, could be a latency issue
    cpu % too

    JohnWPB: Yes, that is the best textual description of the noise. I'll try and get a recording of it this weekend. The hub is worth a shot, I'll need to get ahold of one though.

    It really sounds like grounding issue or some interference, but what makes me skeptical of this is that it works fine as long as I don't enable the hdradio module in RR. So it's basically proven to work fine with a slightly different software configuration (boomzbox player and RR running w/o radio module activated). FYI, my PC, amp and boomzbox are all grounded at the same point. I'm sure there are potential ground loops as I have a tactrix cable installed and I'm uncertain how my powered antennae (wrx) circuit is all laid out. However I've removed all of this equipment at some point to diagnose it with no luck. I've routed the USB cable differently and moved my boomzbox around, used different usb cables, different ports, etc.

    Mitch: I'll get this posted probably tomorrow. Done working on it for today.

    Plan B:
    If I can map rr skin buttons to hotkeys for boomzbox player, I might just be able to frame the boomzbox player nicely in an RR skin with only the display of the player poking through. I'll also need some code in the skin that can mute the radio (by turning the tuner off?) when I switch back to music and vice versa. Then the only functionality I lose is the "now playing" on the skin main menu when radio is on but no big deal. Plan B here is quite the workaround...I'm sure there's something I've overlooked.

    I'm also gonna try to reproduce this on my desktop workstation at some point to further troubleshoot.
