Thumbs up Various RR and DFX errors rendering RR useless. - RESOLVED

I've gone on with this problem for quite some time now and have been able to circumvent the issue by gutting out the RRMedia capabilities, but now I can't do that anymore as it doesn't work anymore after doing it.

Scenario: every time I update RR and\or DFX I do a clean install of everything and redo all of the settings manually. I did that just now, updating both, and whenever I start up RR I get the same error I've always gotten: "MAIN EXE - we intercepted a com error" and it's an AutoIt popup error. I have to close out of RR behind the error because it doesn't go away; I can sit there till my fingers fall off clicking\tapping "OK" and it keeps coming back. For it to go away I have to close out of the program (RR) and then on the system tray I have to close out of RRMediaDB then click "OK" and it'll stop popping up and go away.

Now, my new problems coming up is I can't even view songs in my music folder. I've held "Browser" down and selected "Standard" and it doesn't help, after I click "Browser" nothing happens.

I've tried the following to fix my issue(s):
-reinstall of everything (again)
-deleted all folders known related to RR and DFX (\application data\, \program files\, etc)
-ran a CCLEANER for the hell of it with a registry scrubber (I don't even believe in this crap but did it anyway)
-I can rename the RRMediaDB.exe file in \RideRunner\Plugins\RRMedia to something other than the original file name (RRMediaDB.exe), IE: RRMediaDBORIGINAL.exe. When I do this, the program will open without any errors but then my Music Browser doesn't work (and anything else that utilizes the RRMediaDB apparently)
-Tried to use the skin that RR comes with but it didn't even show up in the RRConfig drop down list and it's a FRESH\CLEAN install.

This is getting extremely aggravating and I don't understand how I now have to look at a $10 10-15sec splash screen nagging me to pay for something that doesn't even work for the basic purpose of music playing.

I'm not trying to bash on this project as I've used RR and DFX since before DFX was 3.0 but it seems like I never get a clear answer or any assistance and just treated like a noob.

I've been using this for a LONG time, I'm well aware of what it does (or can do rather). I'm a computer engineering student so I know how they work inside and out 10 fold, this software is just extremely buggy it seems or there are hidden remnants of the software that need to be removed for a true clean install (and I'm not reinstall windows for that).

Please, any assistance that are constructive are welcomed as this is my primary use of music in my vehicle (even though my stock head unit is still perfectly in tact, I just hate the radio now after using this for so long).

Thank you.

Did you delete RRMediadb.db? It's in your root music directory.

Instead of all the clicking OK and editing files over and over, the only thing you have to do is simply delete the ..\Program Files\RideRunner\Plugins\RRmedia folder, and it will completely and 100% disable, shut down, and prevent RRMedia from running anything at all. That's it, select, delete, done.

No need to uninstall anything and everything RR related in the registry, program files folder, application data folder and so forth.....

You will find that quite a few things in the skin are catered around it, and most of the advanced music features will not work without RRMedia.

As for the cause of the errors, I am not sure what the issues on your system are. You mentioned you are a computer engineer, so all I can say is you need to dig a little deeper In a poll in the DFX thread, 75% of people using the DFX skin are using RRMedia, and there have not been any reports of the problems you are having in a long time. As problems have been reported, and enough information to track it down is posted, the bugs/problems are fixed, and a new version released.

Personally, I would dig deeper and determine what is causing the problem, as there is just NO comparison for RR's standard file browser and RRMedia.

In the standard file browser, if I search for a song (I have around 50,000 songs) it takes RR about a minute to find it. While it is looking, the HD is being slammed, and RR is totally unresponsive until the search is completed. With RRMedia, the same search takes less than a 1/2 of a second to display the search results.

if 75% of people are using it, then it must be working well for them, or I am quite certain they would not use it, and there certainly would be a LOT more posts / threads like this

Indeed, like I said, I don't know the other hidden passages\folders that files are put. Like Strgazr mentioned, there's a file in the root music folder I was unaware of because of all of the music there it was overlooked. After work today I will be deleting that folder and seeing what it does.

I also had installed it without having the RRMedia checked during install and functionality still wasn't responsive.

After posting this last night I had also uninstalled all instances of .NET Framework and reinstalled and it didn't make a difference, same for Flash Player and Flash Player's ActiveX control.

As far as my computer being different than everyone else's, it is rarely connected to the internet and when it is it's for use within RR so chances of malware\viruses or anything else isn't a possibility. It's something to do with RR that is a left over remnant from probably reinstalling and such that I don't know where everything is installed to and where setting\config files are placed.

I will get back to this thread this evening after deleting that file

Okay, progress. As I suspected it was not completely being able to uninstall due to the RRMediaDB.dll file being buried in my root music folder. So now the various startup errors pertaining to AutoIt are gone and I can re-enable RRMedia.

The other problems still remain though. When I click "browser" in music nothing happens, regardless of it being in Standard or Database mode. Another thing I noticed, I can't change the "Global Settings" either (where I can make it speak upon startup and the other various on\off switches don't function). Also, the "Rescan DB" doesn't function at all, when I click the button to rebuild the DB nothing happens.

I CAN browse in "Video" mode and see my videos I have.

I've ensured all adobe flash is updated as well as all windows updates, everything is current. Also updated WinAmp to the current version

I don't know exactly what DFX and RR runs on to really do anything else.

Any ideas greatly appreciated and thanks for the response suggesting the file in the root music folder!

iNcArCeRaTiOn,

I had the same issues a while back after the DB obviously got currupted after multiple BSOD related to another program. I deleted the RRMedia.db file in the music folder and also went to c:\users\<your name>\AppData\Roaming\RRMedia folder and deleted all files and folders. Next I fired up RR and rescanned the database and recreated everything. Hope this helps.

Hey, besjr69, thanks for the response!

Unfortunately, I've already tried that several times. The problem now is that I cannot scan to create a new DB, it doesn't do anything when I click to build a new DB.

Any other responses\ideas are welcomed and appreciated!

Wow, I have no idea where to begin... First, if the RRMediadb.dll was in your music folder, then something is seriously wrong somewhere, as that should be in the plugins folder. It would never, for any reason that I can think of, install it in that location. The only thing stored in the music path is the rrmedia.db. You also mentioned that you removed all references to RRMedia that you could find, deleted the .exe, and possibly the plugins\rrmedia mentioned above. Any one of these, or a combination of them would definitely stop RRMedia from being to build a database or function.

It is impossible to know what portions are still there, and what is not to begin to try to figure out what is going on at this point.

Those were steps I had taken to attempt to fix the issue. At this moment it's basically a fresh install (or as close to it as possible), as far as the file that was in the root music folder I don't recall if it was rrmedia.db or rrmediadb.dll.

When I mentioned removing all references, I didn't mean RRMedia, I was referring to RR and DFX in attempt to just reinstall it all.

The folder in the \application data\RRMedia folder that was previously mentioned is back, as it comes back after loading and so is the folder for RRMedia in the plugins folder (within the \program files\ folder).

I just did ANOTHER fresh install of RR and DFX. This time I did DFX 5.0.3 then the 5.1 patch. I didn't open anything until everything was installed and patched and then configured in RR Config.

Maybe this will be of some assistance, here's my debug.txt file. I simply open RR, go to "Music", then click "Browser". Nothing happens, I hold down "Browser" and click "Database", wait a second, then try clicking "Browser" again, nothing happens. I exit RR.
