    Flash Anyone?

    Hi guys,

The skin portion of Road Runner has been mostly complete since the begginning, although, I have been adding a bunch of extra functionality since the first release.

I have recently researched VB<->Flash integration and I must say, it is really simple to make this work.

What I want to know is if there's any interest for this... If so, I'll need help of someone with a little more knowledge of Flash than myself to help me with making a "test" screen so I can test it.

This would be real quick and painless to add, without compromising the software performance or usability. Nobody would be required to use flash (it would be optional).

For as much as I don't like Flash (in web pages -- where I even have disabled it), I do believe it might be something very interesting in the application scenario.

    Let me know your thoughts...
    Guino.

Yeah, there's quite a bit of interest, but finding someone who can program VB, Flash Action Script and make a good skin at the same time is proving to be quite difficult... Flash to VB is really easy - in fact, I reckon most front ends in VB could be modified to use Flash skins, but I have difficulty with the VB to Flash communication. Me and Danceheaven did a bit of experimentation with it; me doing the Flash bit, and him doing the VB bit, but we live like 200 miles away from each other so progress is veeerry slowww...... In fact, have a search for my username and 'Flash' 'VB'. I did a little experiment with a simple audio player with a simple animation that uses windows media player as its backend.

At the moment, we can get VB forms to go over the Flash skin to display track info etc, but ultimately I'd like the VB part to communicate directly to Flash, but I'm not reallly a programmer so I can't be bothered to figure it out right now....

Meanwhile, try and make sense of this attached pdf....

There's so many great frontend apps here, but I reckon the first one to pull this off will hopefully open the floodgates to the next level

I only need somebody that knows Flash... the VB part is very easy..

I'd need someone to do a simple script with the following:

-One button the triggers a script that executes FSCommand("PLAY", "")
-One Text Box that displays the contents of a script variable "TRACKNAME", but this should update the textbox using the variable every second.
-One (any) Image, as to test overlaying capabilities.

The Variable does not have to be defined in the script (I have ways to do so). The Text Box should (hopefully) not be editable and not show the cursor.

If someone can do this, it will be very easy to add support to flash (to do WHATEVER people want to).

PS: I have seen that document by the way

I had trouble with the variable text box.... I just don't get it! FSCommands are easy though.

Do you know how to make VB give commands to Flash? Say for example, there's a preloader animation (ie, "Loading - please wait") running whilst VB loads a form, but I need a command from VB to Flash so that Flash knows it should stop and progress the animation....Difficult to explain, since it's been a while since I did anything with it. Are you familiar with Action Script? Danceheaven managed to send a command from VB, but can't remember how he did it.

VB can't really send "commands" to Flash, but it can "set" and "get" any variable inside the Script... so you could simply have a loop that would set the TextBox with the contents of a Variable, then VB could update that variable which would make your script update the textbox with the VB info.

It sounds very simple, but I haven't tried it yet, and have never messed with flash before so, it may be easier said than done.. :|

exactly, just the swf will do fine.. Having the source file would be nice for skin makers later..

    Thanks for the support!

    You're right there!

Yes, it's all coming back to me now - I remember the variable bit. It requires an invisible variable text box of some sorts
