one more idea would be to have a (semi-) transparent OSK....

I like the idea of the full screen OSK, easier to type on touchscreens, and for the "I have no clue about what I'm typing", you could use a transparent keyboard, way back I used MapSonic(not the most touchscreen user friendly ) and the Click'n type OSK program which allows to be on top with user-configurable amount of transparency and it was fine for me, had no problems seeing both the keyb and the program.

    Maybe something like this.

Larger, Scrollable text display area that wraps.

    After clicking Preview.

Does that do what you need?
    It's the cake having/eating thing.

AngelGR - I was just coming up with a suggestion to reduce the size of your window when you beat me to it. Excellent concept design. I take it the upper right button wil cycle through alpha, numeric and symbols for each press?

Right, that was my first idea. And the screen showing the characters could be used as "drag zone".

Would it be possible to create a generic interface to build a screen that would be skinnable to pass the key strokes into and once the user presses [Enter] or the like would pass the value to the calling procedure. The functionality of the button that called the OSC would also contain the object or action that the data would interact with.

For example, pressing a button on a skin would bring up the 'OSC' skin, allow the user to input their data and press [Enter]. The input value would then be passed to the requesting object.

This would allow the OSC to be skinnable, and the information that would be passed would be a matter of configuration in the current screens .ini file.

    Hopefully that made sense... :P

But in some cases, like in GPS, when adding character the software is already updating the list... in that case it would be inconvenient to have to press ENTER to pass all the keys... I dont see the problem with skinning the OSK independently of passing the keys one by one

hi, i think a more useable osk could be very helpful in some cases, but a 1/3 - 1/3 - 1/3 osk could be good for the use most user should have to do in the car. just an arrow on the edges of the kb in order to move it up and down and to show the right part of it.
however if we need to type something more complex noting's better than a real keyboard (frog bluetooth kb, for example).
    just my opinion.

That is a good idea! If it makes it easier on the programmer and users I am all for it.

Yeah, Í prefer that too... 1/3 1/3 1/3 and make it as short as possible on the screen
