    Video Playback and Codecs

What decoders do you use for videos? (divx, xvid etc)

On the desktop PC everything is fine, but on car pc NO!!!

I get slow playback (a bit slow) and I cannot get subtitles to work using ffdshow!!

RR on desktop PC is fine though!!

    I use:

    ffdshow 2005-01-22
    Kristal Studio Codecs Pack 4.3.3
    AC3-Filter 1.01a.rc5
    Nic's XviD 2004-12-14
    Ogg Vorbis decoder 0.995
Microsoft Windows Media Video 9 VCM 9.0.1.369
Intervideo WinDVD filter (MPEG, DVD) 5.1.5.11
    VSFilter (VobSub subtitles) 2.33
    DivX Antifreeze 0.40
    RIFF/CDXA Filter (XCD) 8.10
    Haali's Matroska Splitter 2005-01-29
    Morgan Stream Switcher 0.99
    CoreAAC 1.1.0.642

...and if I say that I spend hours installing/configuring everything to my liking everyone will say "Cool"

...and if I say that I'm lazy so I made my own codecpack with the same components and settings everyone will say "oh no, codecpacks are evil"

Codecpacks are Evil There I've said it !

The reason everyone thinks so, is because most of those on the WEB are either virus ridden or full of Spyware.

BUT I'm sure yours isn't. (is it ?)

The only ones you should really need are ffdshow & AC3 filter.

    Moa ?
Nah, only my personal trojans I use to harvest peoples banking information, but apart from that it's clean...

I agree, generally they are, but it's funny that people are so against it they don't even take the time to listen.

Well.. the later versions of ffdshow have some support for mpeg2, but it's not there just yet, especially the dvd playback.
    I use ffdshow for divx 4 & 5 & xvid.

I've heard of issues with Divx/Xvid when installing the DivX Player that comes with the codec.. a user went through the trouble of re-installing the whole OS to find that out..

What about the slow playback and the problem with the subtitles I've mentioned??

Does RR output dolby digital on DVD playback?

That's what I said about the DivX player: it messes up/quaility speed of playback..

RR doesn't output Digital sound (unless your card maps wave to digital automatically, but it would most likely be 2 channel). This is the reason why I made support for MPC -- it does support digital output..

I don't have Divx player installed!! i use the codecs from Power DVD!!

For the last month I didn't have my DVD installed because i sent it back for replacement in the warranty!! Now that I have I am doingg some minor changes on the fabrications so it is not installed and I haven't tried it yet!!

If I choose MPC I suppose I will have the controls from the RR skin, right?

To be on the subject, which xvid, divx codecs would you recommend?

Any clue why ffdshow won't work on the car pc?

All I ever recommend installing is: DivX codec (non-pro, no DivX player). XviD codec, AC3 DirectShow Filters -- and MAYBE the DivX 3.11 BEFORE everything IF and ONLY IF you have videos with the old DivX Audio hack in it. That's all I ever had.. none of the codec pack stuff.. ok, if you want to use subtittles etc, you can install the SUB codec etc.. but I'd use MPC myself.. I've had too much problems with codec packs in the past to ever want or recommend installing one again..
