    MPEG 4 and titles...

MPEG 4 and titles... anyone have a secret to getting it working?

The ID3 functionality works perfectly for my MP3 files, but I have several MPEG Layer 4 (m4a) music files that have title information saved, but RR won't read them... The files play just fine, but I can't see the artist in the browse list/PL.

So if anyone has a fix or knows what I've screwed up, I'd appreciate a clue and a slap on the back of the head. Thanks.

BTW Guino, thank you again for this most excellent app. I've always liked MediaCar's interface, and recently finally got to ditch its anoying bugs and go to RR.

Unless you find me some good documentation or code on loading MP4 tags, I have no way of adding this..

I really just implemented ID3 because it is popular.. I myself just use the filenames, but if I get good documentaion on it it woundn't be a big deal ..

I don't wanna bog you down with something that won't be much of a benefit to everyone... but I'll see if I can dig up some code or documentation (I don't think there's an official spec for MPEG Layer-4 Audio titles, it's all been reverse-engineered from Apple's implementation)...

    Thanks again

    Question

Sorry for resurecting an old thread. But I thought that this needed another look at. Instead of trying to read all the different tags for all the different formats, why don't you read the track title off the Winamp main window? You've already got it open and getting other data from the main window. Wouldn't it be easier to use winamp to configure the titles, and you just read them? You could also do that for the playlist window too.

That would mean, as long as winamp supported reading the tags for a file format, Roadrunner would (And in my opinion, Winamp has some very advanced title manipulation that can come in handy )

You can use tags from winamp in any format, just turn on the media library support and make it scan all files, once you've done that, RR will show options to browse by Album/Artist/Genre so you can select your music -- the songs you select this will will have the tag info as it was loaded by winamp. However, loading files directly from disc still won't load those tags.

dont they all save the tag information the same way?
This is something ive been wanting also as i no longer rip music to .mp3 files and now have a number of .wma and mp4 files.

A while ago i ran into some autoit scripts that read tag data from mp4 files, ill see if i can dig it up, may be of some use. Ill also look and see if i can find any information on reading tags in general.
Maybe even some of the other frontend devs here can help out on this matter, im sure someone has to know something about it.

Winamp reads the tags (of different formats) and stores it all together (in the same format) for the media library to use. RR is able to read from the media library, and so, read the tag of those items (just not directly when loading from file). Now, the problem to read the tags directly is that generaly is a lot of code to support one single file format.. so I'd add support for WMA and people will complain about mp4, or ogg or vqf or ac3 .... and so forth.

I understand the issue of coding a lot of stuff for each format. Just doing a little searching on this earlier i could see how the people who created all these formats have made it really difficult to read what would seem to be simple info from the file, esp Microsoft and the wma format.

    So here is another idea.

    I have a winamp plugin i found called CurrentlyPlaying2txt
    http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=145172
That will save the current song info to a txt file. It gets the info from the winamp playlist so its the same data that RR would recieve when not loading the file from disk.

I know there is a way (or at least i think) for a RR label to read the contents of a file.

The data inside the txt file for the plugin looks like this
    Code:
Creed - human clay-Are you ready?
    1. Creed - human clay-Are you ready? - Winamp
In my winamp settings my playlist is formatted like this
    Code:
    [%artist% - ][%album%-]$if2(%title%,$filepart(%filename%))
Maybe we can use this plugin to get the data into RR when loading files from disk. This way we dont have to worry about formats etc and leave that up to winamp. Or (wish list) if someone here has any experience with writing winamp plugins someone can make one just like this but instead of saving a txt file it sends the data directly to RR

There's an easier way to get info of the current song's title from winamp, I actually have to avoid reading that info so it doesn't show info on a different format than what's set in RR. The problem is that that info is only available for the CURRENT song, and what about the rest ? plus, it kind of sucks having to set things up in winamp like that, I mean, the least settings needed, the better.

Yeah i understand that, but then it doesn't really leave any other options avail.
I don't care much about the other tracks that aren't playing, everything else is in order. The title of the song always shows up no matter what, even if its just the file name, its the Artist and Album info thats always missing for me. So all the labels i have that are set for Artist/album just show the track name.
