    DAB For UK Users

    Hi,

Found this API... I was wondering Guino is there is any chace in the future you may be able to add it in... although I know you wont be able to test it.

It also gives access to TPEG which is the new TMC equivelent for travel data... therefore I spose could be intergrated with MM and others for the EU.

I know there are some people lookingt at this so you never know...

Coudnt find the protocol for download.. it said -- at request.. I am unable to do any testing with this stuff without the hardware or DAB signals.. It should be verysimple for anybody to make a plugin to support this (like I'm doinf for XM support).

    Hey Terran,

I took a look at this after the meet .... I have a copy of the API stuff but not sure if my WaveFinder is good enough for in the car.

I did play with the api for a day or so, but all I could get was my wavefinder to flash, nothing else, I couldnt get it to answer the tuned call If I remember right.

well that will save me sometime then. I will be getting a usb tv/radio card soon. just need to find the right one to get! I'm hoping the next radio will have better reception than the dlink and will also be louder when plugged into the line in. heres hoping

.... I was thinking... the main reason I am looking at DAB is to get a TPEG feed... now if reception is patchy and you just loose the signal every so often then it may still be viable ? Ie just grabbing an update every few mins ?

    Any thoughts ???

Danceheaven may want to comment, we had a chat about it in person a few weeks ago at the meet.

    I'll take a look tomorrow.

I looked at this last year, the best I could do with the *terrible* VIADAB 2 API was to get it to flash an LED blue, nothing more

It looks like the page has been updated in 2005, so I'll take a look and see what I can come up with. Don't hold your breath though, as the WaveFinder has to be the worst bit of hardware I've ever had the mis-fortune to try to use.

Also, DAB in it's implementation in the UK is f**king terrible. Each multiplex is capable of 1.544mbps of MP2 data, and each stream with up to 256kbps (so 6 full-quality channels on each multiplex)

So what has the BBC done? Exactly the same as every other digital provider in the UK. Got into their minds that digital = more channels, so they've stuck 10-14 stations on each multiplex, most at 128kbps, and MP2 is worse than MP3 at the same bitrate - 128kbps MP2 is about the same quality as a 96kbps MP3 - and if you've ever had the mis-fortune to hear one of those...you'll understand where they've gone wrong

Unfortunately with all the money invested into DAB by the BBC and the government, we are stuck with the terrible implementation of DAB, and are very unlikely to see a decent digital radio service such as XM in the UK
