Help! Winamp locks up!!

I really am not a big fan of winamp, but thats probably because I'm not familiar as I never had used it before. Everything was working just fine until today.

I drove to work today and it seemed fine (but it was a short ride) I left work for a business trip across a few towns and found that the computer locked up after about 10 minutes of driving. I shut it down (by pulling power and the battery cause even the power button for 4 + seconds wouldn't shut it down) I then rebooted and it did the same thing over and over again. At first I thought it was road runner, but then I tried just running winamp seperate and listened to music and it did the same thing. The hard drive is thinking, but it does the same little like pattern with pauses over and over again(its also not thinking very hard) The music will play for like 1 second then stop again for about a minute...

Two things. Last night I installed .net framework 1.1 and centrafuse on the computer, but didn't change anything with winamp. I also uploaded some new music I ripped at 192kb yesterday making for the highest kb rate songs I have... I have never had trouble with 128, and I wanted alittle better for this stuff(I was playing this stuff starting this morning). I uninstalled both centrafuse and .net framework and it still does the same thing. I am going nuts and don't know what to do. When I get out of work I will try uninstalling and reinstalling winamp, but I'm not holding my breath. It had continually asked me if I wanted to upgrade winamp, but I finally clicked no last night cause I was tired of the ding noise windows made when I opened roadrunner because of it.

Winamp is by far one of the most stable applications I've ever seen for music. If it freezes, this is typically a hardware issue or a bad plugin installed. I'd suggest trying the uninstall/install deal but make sure and delete the whole winamp folder from the hard drive. I would also suggest a disk check while at it..

You should also try playing the same MP3s with another player or front end to see if the machine freezes at all.. if it does, chances are it is a hardware issue.

I havn't changed any hardware since it was working properly. Would hardware all of a sudden start causing trouble?

nothing lasts forever.. in any case, I'd try different applications (non-music) and see if the PC freezes at all.. I see you're in Maine, not sure when you installed your system, but it is now almost summer and temperatures are going up which increase the chances of overheating a CPU for instance and freezing up the computer.

Temps don't ever go up in Maine... its still 45 out. (Edit: I take that back, its actually 59! but its supposed to be lower 40's again tonight)

I installed it about 3 weeks ago... everything is brand new, so nothing should be breaking! I have tried other apps such as centrafuse and it worked fine, as well as gps worked as well... while winamp locks up I can get other things to respond, but very slowely... winamp however will not respond.

PSU? I have a laptop. I'm not sure how a psu would cause it to lock up anyways. But, the long and the short of it is for now I think it was a bad cluster on the hard drive... thanks to guino it works now! I probably wouldn't have thought of it. I tried a different song and it worked fine, then I tried that song winamp kept locking up on in windows media player and it didn't lock up, but it blipped and finally threw an error and stopped trying to play, so I knew it was that song and sure enough when I ran check disk it found a bad cluster in that song. So, all is well that ends well. Thanks!

what laptop do you have? is it a toshiba? i have has very similar problems, it turns out to be the drivers for the sound card, the strangest thing is, i updated them and it worked fine, all of a suden it started again, tried updating again and nothing.

Winamp has gone down hill.. been using it for about 10 years and it was better when it was free. Sense they went pro and added all the crap to it it skipps and does exactly as described. The old version I have in my car works great but keeps telling me about security fix needing to be updated. All the latest versions suck! used to play flac perfectly now it plays, the bar stops moving, and then it freezes with the error this program stopped responding. I love winamp.. Got everyone using it and if it was a hard ware issue 7 pcs in the house wouldnt do it, as well as many people who i know are using it same problem.. Shoutcast skipps like a broken cd.. mp3s seeem ok.. but everynow and then with higher bitrate it locks up.. as far as the poster above with pc in car... the vibration will tear up hard drives over time so check that... but there is a bug with winamp.. using media player for 12hrs now constant without 1 glitch and added the flac codec to it

ppl @ winamp need read this and fix their software
