I haven't had any probs with Winamp for over a year. I use the old version like RR recomends. The fact that in order to rip non WMA you have to add a 3rd party app defeats the purpose of not using CDRIp.

Plus, Winamp really whips the Llama's ***!

There are 2 FE that I really like to use and plus supports on both are great.
FrodoPlayer and RoadRunner. I pick RoadRunner because it uses winamp.
Before RoadRunner, I used MediaCar. Since Coyotte abandon the project, I used Frodo. Yes Frodo still installed, but rarely use.
I used Winamp since the early day of mp3 and my college years and love it. But I have to say that winamp3 and winamp5 suck compare to the old 2.xx version.

@accentsound: You do bring up a decent point with the fact that WMP advances very fast.. At the same time, winamp DOES advance as well (given that probably not so fast, but should be compatible for a very long time to come -- past the time that RR itself becomes incompatible with other stuff)... I do keep up with the latest releases of Winamp exactly to ensure that it is 100% compatible with RR.. but you're right that I can't give support for winamp (or its issues).. and this is just the same with WMP, that is, I can't provide support for it (and its issues). Overall, winamp has the best features over WMP, but this is just my humble opinion... Yes, WMP has built in DVD player (one which would suck at 800x600 at wide physical aspect ratio)... and Yes, it has a built in CDripper (that I am pretty sure has no interface that can be controlled from within RR) ... and it does have support for different codecs (just as winamp does)...

What I am trying to say is that I did research different players before deciding to go with winamp (WMP, Foobar, Winamp etc) and I simply chose winamp because, overall, it had the best programming interface... now, this doesn't mean I will strictly keep winamp as the audio player. I have looked into integrating iTunes and WMP as options.:iTunes has a interface that is very close to winamp's interface, so i's easy but iTunes is very Heavy on memory.. WMP lacks many nice features that winamp has and requires a lot of extra code to make it work up to the level of the current winamp interface. Also, using WMP/iTunes would strip out some of the current features of RR such as the Line in plugin support and the TV plugin -- that is of course, if you didn't want to use winamp for such features.

Still, I know I can't please EVERYBODY at once so some will talk bad about winamp and some about WMP and some about both and so on.. it's always impossible to please everybody.. I can at most provide options for those that are unhappy, but options just make configuration more complex and that may cause a great number of people to complain (people that otherwise could be happy)...

I honestly would like to quit my job and work on RR Full Time... had the chance, I'd make an interface for most major players available... but I have bills to pay so that's not an option currently. I'll probably still work on an interface for other players, but it will likely be awhile before I have the chance to work on it..

I rip MP3s in WMP (v10) on my home computer, and never installed any 3rd party software that I'm aware of. I may have installed a plugin that was piggybacked with some other software without me knowing, but my daughter's WMP will also rip MP3s, and it less like that a plugin was accidently installed on it...
I'm not sure if I believe MWP is rock solid though, I've had so weird little bugs with it. (Songs being permantly lost when I didn't delete them, for example. And wierd menu/display glitches, etc.)
I currently use Frodoplayer, but will play with RR, as soon as I can find a working skin. Edit - found them on the RR homepage. Wow, they're big!

My opinion Guino is that you should use iTunes,
It is by far the easiest to use and if it wasn't for its small letters/icons I would use it for music playing in my car's 7" touch screen.
iPod support is a major thing! The ability to have a friends iPod show up on the interface would be a great addition, WMP will never support that feature so only Winamp and iTunes suffice.
I think Winamp is the second best choice, you are the programmer so you choose, I don't think that having an application that uses a lot of resources (iTunes) should be such a big issue for most ppl that have fast computers. I think that ppl that have slow computers are holding the others behind, if you choose to provide two versions one a lite and another a full version for ppl's preferences that might please most ppl.
Time and money are always issues, but I think that 80% of ppl can run iTunes without a problem!

i think winamp is the best choice, its always been small fast and stable for me, WMP has always been bloated and sluggish plus it dosent support an eq, and most importantly winamp plays all my music gapless!
