Ways to pull in NMEA data?

This is going to sound silly, but just for the purposes of illustration, is there any way to pull in data from the GPS for altitude?

Assuming I use a port splitter like xport 3, is there any way for RR to read it? I know that there are some commands for Mapmonkey, but it doesn't fly with iguidance. Besides, I'm more interesting in reading ANYthing from NMEA.

    Label Codes from "Skin Commands.txt"

"GPSLAT" - GPS Latitude (Road Runner Only)
"GPSLON" - GPS Longitude (Road Runner Only)
"GPSSPD" - GPS Speed (In whatever units specified in RRConfig -- Mi/h or Km/h) (Road Runner Only)
"GPSHDG" - GPS Heading (in degrees only) (Road Runner Only)
"GPSALT" - GPS Altitude (In whatever units specified in RRConfig -- ft or m) (Road Runner Only)
"GPSSAT" - GPS Satellites used (this is 0 if GPS has no valid info) (Road Runner Only)

Thanks Softec. I tried those but none of them yeilded any data.

Perhaps I'm using the commands incorrectly. Has anyone used these with success?

Make sure that you have set the gpsport correctly in rr.ini
If you have a gps application already running then that application will be holding the com port open an rr will not be able to recieve any data. To get around this use some software (like xport) which will allow you to output a single incoming port to multiple output ports.
Then the GPSxxx codes should work fine.

The easy way out is to set your gps settings in rr.config to MAPPOINT not external gps. Point it to you gps software path and rr will read the data without a com splitter.

Thanks MGD. I tried that & got mixed results. The data did indeed show up, but bounced like mad all over the map, so I don't think it was valid, or reading correctly, or something. Also, IG wouldn't work (in my existing buttons). I don't think I like that method, but I haven't given it a fair shake. I'm going to try xport3 & see if that works better.

Well, I got it working. Here's the skinny.
The skin commands need to read from somewhere. A port has to be specified in RR, not ann external prog. So since I was using an external prog (IG), it didn't know where to get the data.

So I switched to Mappoint in rrconfig, as suggested. It worked, but I lost IG. One wouldn't work without the other.
I noticed this line in rr.ini when mappoint was used: mappointport=0 This is what I need to get the skincommands working.

So then I made my rrcongif read "external" & point to IG so that IG worked. No sweat. 2 more steps.
I installed xport3 (thanks Curiosity!) and cloned port 1 to ports 5 & 7. Then, I went in to IG & it autodetected 2 COM ports (5 & 7) & chose 5. I changed the line in rr.ini to say mappointport=7 , and everything works hunky dory now.

It's sweet. Thanks Guino for putting those in there!
