Milkdrop - Low Video Memory Error

I have installed Milkdrop and set it as the default visualization in RRConfig. When I hit the viz button in RR Milkdrop does not load and I get an error message that says that my video memory is too low. Sometimes I get a different message saying Direct X cannot load and that that is usually a result of insufficient video memory. My video card has 32meg, which I think should be plenty. Any ideas what might be going on and how to fix it?

Can you run the vis at a lower resolution or with less detail successfully?

The Video Memory error message is pretty self-explanitory.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Go to the vis settings and try a lower resolution.

Yes, but it makes the viz pretty splotchy. It just seems to me that 32 meg should be plenty and that maybe there's something else I'm missing. It works fine if I'm running Milkdrop and Winamp outside of RR. If 32 meg really isn't enough, I guess I'll just have to live with it.

For anyone interested, I reduced the hardware acceleration in my display properties and all now seems to be working.
