It is true that there are problems with 1.10, (being the main one that the playlist is broken) but I can tell you that is not complicate at all.. I don't know why frodo put that scaring note about being only for veterans. also skins don't need any mods (only if you adding the two buttons in main screen)

    RR vs Frodo.

    This is only my opinion.

    I am running RoadRunner

I didn't install Frodo, mainly because there seemed to many 'requirements' before getting started.

Also I like the fact that RR is continually being updated, is easily skinnable (FP maybe as well), and the source is available so other people can have an input, and god forbid Guino decides he has enough, there are many out there who will take on the mantle.

The only thing I am waiting for on RR is dual screens, when It has that it will the bees knees (hint hint)

seems like a very odd reason to not even try something. Sounds kind of like, how can processor A be faster than processor B, when A has lower Mhz? AMD and Intel anyone.
Ive added thousands of tracks to RR and havent had any speed issues with playlist or loading playlist or tracks.

as far as whats the biggest differences between FP and RR, i can say i was a hardcore FP user and still much respect for Frodo. Im also now a hardcore RR user with much respect for Guino and all other who contribute to RR.

FP is for the most part a one monkey show so updates etc, will suffer based on how busy the monkey is with picking bannanas and other aspects of personal life.

RR is open source, and although Guino is the main contributer to the code base, there have been significant additions by other people. Which leads to incredible update frequency. Its no suprise to see 3 updates in one month, and they arent just bug fixes. Also, the skinning peeps release and update skins almost everyday it seems.

FP is light fast > but the UI is also not as full featured as RR

FP is database driven > but new tracks addes will require the database be rebuilt

FP is based on windows media player> RR is based on winamp, choose your poison
winamp is far more customizeable than wmp with addons etc

RR has multiple solutions for intergrated and embeded GPS apps and gps related features that go beyond just embeding your favorite gps apps window.

RR is very, very, very customizeable with sending and recieving commands from external apps, flash objects, scripts etc. Although the learning curve is steaper than FP, you can bend RR to do pretty much whatever you want. And if you cant, someone is working on a solution.

FP is audio player based, meaning the main screen you see when you first open the program is the audio player. RR is in a way menu based, but in no way restricted to this. You can have it as lite or bloated as you want.

strip away all the candy and fluff, get down to the meat of things and the core feature of both of these apps. The audio player, i mean music IS the reason most of us are even doing any of this, with GPS nav being a close second.

FP audio player has a bunch of different modes to browse through your media, of which i only used Directory2 as i dont like ID3tags (even though mine are accurate). FP shows the directory of music in one list and the tracks contained in that Dir in another list, its also recursive so if you have a DIR that has 5 folders each with a differnt album, you dont have to select each folder to see or play whats in each album. Just select the parent folder, all children are loaded and ready to play instantly. Select/highlight Dir and click play, or do nothing and when the current track is finished playing it will automaticly start playing the new Dir. This method IMO is the fastest and easiest way to play your music that is available,.... still.

RR has a few different ways to browse your media. First off being playlist based, you must first locate what tracks you want to listen to, then replace or append them to the playlist. You can locate the tracks by browseing through the physical DIR structure that the media is located in, similar to Directory2 mode in FP. Or you can browse by Artist, Album, Genre sorted by ID3 tags (also avail in FP) using the winamp lib database. Or you can browse by album art, which is just like directory browseing, but with thumbnail pics of each album. There is no loading in Album art mode, while FP preloads the album art.

Both methods are fast and both apps offer more than one method of getting to your music. But in my honest opinion there isnt a frontend or audio player in general that has successfully done this task 100% the way i would like to. But that dosent mean it wont for you.

Other things that moved me from FP to RR, for the most part were how customizeable RR is with its skinning and commands, that i basicly build my own frontend to work the way i want it to work (w exceptions) and look the way i want it to look. My current skin LSX, with its layout and features and extra stuff wouldnt work with FP (thats why the port is still on hold).

so in a nut shell, download both apps try them out and see what you like.
If you want to really know which frontend is most popular, dont look at the number of posted threads, although this will give you a good idea but always the case. Look at how many skins are available for any frontend and that will give you a very good idea of how the app is going.

Doesn't RR have winamp library support? If so, that's your DB.

    Great reply LS.

I was a staunch FP user and was put off RR at first as it appeared to need a lot of configuring. However, it was CdR's MC1.0 skin that enticed me over to RR. Since then much has happened with CdR, Gobby, Skippy and of course Guino all improving the look and functionality of RR beyond all recognition.

Personally, RR does it for me at the moment. Sure there are some individual features that FP and RR each do better but it is what suits the user that is the key. RR's popularity has inceased significantly because of the work done by a few key people. Frodo, God love him, is primarily doing it all himself with limited time availability. The search facility in FP is what I miss most of all.

I have no doubt that the popularity of individual frontends ebbs and flows dependant on the amount of new or upgraded features and the speed at which the come along. For me I'm happy with RR at present but I'm a whore just like everyone else on the forum and will happily change to something else that pleases me more. Best advice is pretty much what LS said, try them both on and see what fits you best.

easily.. you just have to use a skin that has the audio buttons. I use MC2.0 for example. The reason i switched is the customization RR offers. My god you can change anything and have a setup thats totally customized to your taste. This is hard initially but learning a few basic skin commands opens up the whole program to be changed. The only thing i truly miss is the search function from frodo. RR's to me is just sloppy. At times i type the song as listed in the directory and still cant find it. So what i do is just load the entire album folder and go from there. I've used RR for about a year now and in that amount of time they've added more USEFULL features than i can count. We're not talkin bug patches, but things that totally add to the carputer experience.

It does but for the life of me i dont understand how to cleanly implement it. For instance there's no "update database" button in RR and the searching is still sloppy.

Oh please, I'm not that dense. I've read all about why Guino won't make RR database driven. I know how both ways work and which way is logically going to be better for my 14,000+ songs. If it were really that easy to pull out my car computer to test out every new frontend, believe me, I would have tried it out. I've read plenty of good things about it to know RR is a great frontend. I'm not bashing it any way

    P.S.
liquid, the information you posted above would be a great addition to the review section of the forum. There is already a FP thread that you could add that to, but nothing on RR.

    P.S.S.
I just happened to pull my car computer in last night for the first time 8 months to install StreetDeck so I'll load in FF too.
