hi all. i run a vfd serial display in my bathroom using the winamp plugin that spudgunblunder mentioned earlier it allows you to display winamp and pc info onto the display and control a menu sysem either by a button matrix or by remote control (handy if in the bath) it allows you to select artist then album and will display artist, album, track number, genre, volume, time, date, etc in any position on the display in fact everything except RR and FD info. the vfd would be much easier to read than a lcd as the viewing angle is much better and would be more suited to a car. as winamp runs with RR it would be easy to implement. i have a couple of spare vfd displays (4x20) and the customised plugin i had to write for them if anybody is interested, i am in Liverpool UK and if you collect you can have them for free! (only have two spare so first come first serve)
the standard plugin for lcd and vfd can be found at http://www.markuszehnder.ch/projects...n/pictures.php
you also need the albumlist plugin that is linked to on this site.
i can post pictures of running display if you want just let me know.

Hi fella, wouldnt mind one of them screens, but my cars going in for window tints today so no transport, I will have it back tomorrow if you still have em, I'm not to far from you and used to work in Liverpool myself and have had many a good night out there

Anyway if you still have 1 left in a couple of days I would be very interested in it. I would of course have a play at writing some software for it as well

    cheers

Apparently the driver won't work unless it's connected to a hardware LPT port, but to be honest I haven't tried it - might have to give it a shot...
There are circuits about on the net to convert the LCD to a serial input (a simple-ish one using just 3 wires from the parallel port and a PIC based one using the RS232 serial port) and I have also found a circuit (again using a PIC) to convert the LCD to USB.
The advantages of the RS232 and USB circuits are software controlled contrast and back-light level, and of course the cable. Not too sure about software for the USB one.

I have done loads of reading up on these LCDs. I am surprised at how popular they still are, maybe it's worth consolidating into an FAQ type thread.
