audio browser slow....very high memory usage

I have been having the same problems as a few other ppl with my RR becoming quite slow, both at load of the initial applications, gps, audio browser, audio player, but primarily the browser. What i recently figured out was that when i press the key i defined for down/up in a list the cpu jumps to 100% for the duration of the delay, and also the memory allocated to RR.exe jumps from around 14megs to 31megs !!! is that not something very strange ? i disabled any kind of id3 tags any formatting of the listing....still no go. any suggestions ?

Using the latest RR version, correct? (I think 2/19/06). What other software is running at the same time?

yup, just upgraded it today, still the same issue. I have the same problem on my other homepc 1,4Ghz t-bird. which is quite a bit more powerfull but only slightly faster than my epia800. I have only RR running on the epia, even without anything else like gps running it is still the same, however it does not get any slower if i start a browser/gps at the same time.

OK, i tried something interesting now......my skin is BrushMetal, and in the skin file in question (audio_browser.skin) i found this in the bottom :

    /, (R) Movie Information
    /, FORE BACK
    /, x y w h r g b r g b pt font
    /, --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- -- ----
    R01,000,000,001,001,255,255,255,051,084,103,15,"Ar ial:B"

Now i can't find any reference to that in the skin commands file.......so i removed it and it does not lag nearly as much, i can step 10-12 items down the list and then like 0,5 secs lag, no biggie. Seems to have fixed the problem.

let me check.....i did have some text files of around 2 kilobytes in some dirs. Could that be the reason for the list scroll lag ? like i said, i cant find the RXX skin command, so i have no clue what it does

Rxx... is a definition for Album TEXT art. The original alpine skins had it, and so did the original MC skin. This is only in RR for compatibility reasons as it seems to be a very unpopular feature. I believe I just forgot to include that definition in Skin Commands.txt

Well, go to the folder where the skin you are using is located. find audio_browser.skin, open it and find a line that starts with R and put a /, in front of it. Then try you browselist again.
