    Please help on Itunes/Ipod

Hello, I use Itunes because I have an Ipod nano.

My music collection is on the laptop and I would like to use the Ipod to stick it into the car-pc and browse my music.

I set IPODDRIVE=E (as Ipod shows up as E in explorer) in RR.ini, but nothing happened.
When I go to -- ARTISTS, -- ALBUMS, etc.. I only see the winamp database.

Where do I find my music? How is it supposed to work?

Or would you point me to another setup, throwing away Itunes and using Winamp as a music manager on my laptop with a plugin?!?

I have not checked the combination Winamp/Ipod.. But I ITunes seems to do everything I want on my laptop.. so I do not see any reason to switch over to anything else.

Please help. I tried the search button, but did not find the right trick..

    Thanks alot in advance
    Jens

We need some more info on that.
    What skin?
    Do you have BROWSE.RRL
How is your Music Folder setup?
Here is an example of Browse.rrl.

    D:\;>Play CD's<
    E:\;>Play IPod<
    C:\Music;>Select All<

    D is your CD Drive
    E is your IPod
C:\****** is the folder where you store your albums on the C Drive

Put that in a text file and save it as BROWSE.RRL
Now when ever you go into the audio_Browser.skin then you have this otions on top of the list and you can browse any drive or folder. Change the drive letters to your configuration.

If you already set the ipoddrive setting and you know that it is correct, then you may have to go in ITUNES and click on the option to allow you to use the IPOD as an external hard drive (So you can copy files to/from it)... otherwise nothing in windows will allow you to access the IPOD.. this is the single reason why I recommend NOT installing iTunes in your car -- unless you plan to use it in the car, with the small *** buttons and all that crap it loads on the background and such.

    Ok..

    1. I didnt know about the browse.rrl file. Where do I have to put it in?

This is the text file I created..
    E:\;>ipod<
    C:\Music;>local Music<

I placed it into the individual skins directory and I placed it into the main program directory.
The behaviour is still the same. When I enter the browser I see three top lines..
    -- Artist
    -- Album
    -- Genre
then all my MP3 files in the directory I configured in RR config.
When I move up an directory (means to the root) I even can see my whole C: drive.

But nowhere I can see the entries I configured in browse.rrl.

I do not have Itunes installed on my car pc. I do see my ipod in explorer as drive E:

I am little bit confused.. cannot be so difficult, can it? :-(

    One silly question:
When it will work, will it allow me to browse my Music on the Ipod in the way it works with Itunes or similar.
I mean, can I browse by Album, Artist, and/or will I see my intelligent playlists (Top25, latest added, etc..)

Or will it just allow to browse the files, like I can see them in the explorer?!
I realized that Itunes gives random names to the files copied to the Ipod and there seems to be no structure.. all is inside the ItunesDB.

Thank you for all your support tips.. I hope I find out soon whats wrong

    Ahhh.. I found out!
The purpose of browse.rrl is to sit inside the directory a want to browse. so I can have as many browse.rrl files as I have directories..

Ok, now it seems to work but immediatly brings up my question above:

It seems that I can "only" navigate through the file structure that Itunes has put in the Ipod.
Radom file names (yes, I see the ID3 tags).. and random folders.. F01..F02..F03..
    :-(
That is not exactly what I expected..

How do you guys out there utilize the Ipod with roadrunner? What is best practise?

Hello guino, maybe I have confused people here.

    1. I have never installed Itune on my car pc. So do already see my Ipod in the windows explorer with drive letter E: and I can browse its files. (Means it is in disc mode) So post #3 seems not to apply to me?!
    enre..
    2. I set the IPODDRIVE=E in RR.INI and I placed the browse.rrl into main main music folder on my harddisk..

So far so good. That seems to work. I now can browser the files on the IPOD. I click the link I defined in browse.rrl and I jump to drive E: there I can navigate into the file structure of the IPOD and select songs and play them ..

The real problem now is only: Is it supposed to work in this way?
I cannot access any playlist of the Ipod or Album/Artist or Genre. I just navigate through the file stucture and click on the individual MP3s.

With this strategy of browsng the files the Ipod fun is gone.. because Itunes has placed all the MP3s in random order and with strange namings.. so I need to know where a song is to navigate there..

That's the thing, you don't need the browse.rrl file to browse the ipod.. RR should try to find the iTunesDB file on your E drive and display Artist/Album/Genre entries in the main music folder for your iPod.. that's how it's supposed to work.. no need to try and figure out where/what songs you have in there.. if this isn't happening, then perhaps there's something on a newer version of iTunes that was changed or your RR is very old and doesn't have support for it. You can send me the iTunesDB file under /iPod_Control/iTunes/ of your iPod if you'd like me to test/try it.. my email is on my public profile.

on-the-fly playlists and others that have not yet been converted by itunes into "real" playlists, will not show in RR. Once itunes converts those, they will show.
