    RRConfig Utility Proposal

UPDATE: April 1 - No April Fools Joke - Updated JAR pacage
    RRConfig Utility Proposal

UPDATE : March 31st - See post RRConfig Utility Proposal

Updated program with Generic Format. Alpha 1.

    --------------------------------------------

    Hello,

As we all know, the RRConfig utility is starting to become severly outdated. I also remember reading somwhere (true or not, I do not know) that the current Config utility has reached its maximum capabilty and must be redesigned.

I remember there was an attempt by I believe Skippy (hope I'm not wrong) to make an updated one a while back. Has this been updated?

So, anyways, I am proposing to create a new RRConfig utility. I am willing to stay the maintainer on it and keep it open source. Thing is, if I am doing it, this will be done Java 1.5.0 (also known as Java 5.0 now....).

What I would like to know, before I put a serious effort into this, is guage interest in this running on a Java platform. (I will consider all requests in VB as a reason to not to continue. Sorry.) So please let me know your serious level of interest in this. Also, Guino, this is for you, would you support this in your official package being that it is JRE dependent?

for now, I have put up a Jar of the format I plan on making the GUI. Its simple, and only shows the basic concept, and is not even in working condition. But there just to give you an idea where I am heading. i can turn this to be fully Skinnable in the future, but that is not my goal at this moment.

I guess having an up-to-date RRConfig in Java beats having an outdated one in VB. I am for it. And thanks for taking up this challenge at the expense of your own time.

I don't know how this would work, but why not make RRConfig skinnable? You could add or subtract the features you think you are going to need, and it would make it extremely easy to update the config file.

I'm not a big fan of Java, but would be more than glad to answer any questions you have in order to make a new config utility.. we'll always have the one in VB regardless. It's just sad I don't spend much time to bring it up to date.

Didn't think about doing it the way you mentioned it kiltjim, but it is definitely doable and sounds like a very smart idea for the long hual. Would keep it easy to maintain as you said. I'll definitely keep that in mind.

    Red face Java's dependency

Agree that RRConfig needs some work. I am not much fun of Java in this scenario. I hate having to install JRE just to run the RRConfig. I would think that if RR was cross platform (I am not sure if is) then sure; why not, beats VB. For now, at least with VB I can "drop" the files and it's good to go not to mention VB is somewhat more familiar language to most of us.

    humm, i dont know
i kind of agree with everyone in that installing JRE just for a config util is kind of overkill but.... we do need a new util too so im kind of on the fence. But whatever language, i think the skinning should be done exactly as in RR. Actually it should be a RR plugin so im not sure if it has to be VB for that or not.

One think i dont understand about the whole thing (not your java idea) is it seems (at least to me) that everyone is trying to squash an ant with a sledge hammer. But im no programmer either so who knows, it may be worthy of a sledge hammer. But it just seems, all we need is a way to update the rr.ini file with predefined output. I would think that something like this could even been done in a web browser.
