I'm at the stage in my system testing where I'm trying out the latest version of Roadrunner to use as a frontend. I've tested the app on one of my workstations and it started up and ran perfectly.
When I transferred it to my carPC (EPIA MII-12000, onboard video, win2kpro svcpk4, 512 RAM, onboard sound, MTSVO-SC LCD with touchscreen drivers installed, DirectX 7.0, running at 800x600 and trying the Kuo Clean Skin) it crashes on startup. I get the error:
"rr.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You
will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created."
Anyone know what a likely cause of this might be? I have winamp 2.95 installed on the system, but so far I have left the Winamp settings in roadrunner blank. (I have not pointed it to the winamp path). On startup, it seems to be crashing right at the point where the text says "Starting winamp ..." After it crashes, my windows taskbar has disappeared from the screen.
I added the winamp path to the rrconfig app, and RR still crashes, but winamp stays open on the screen after RR crashes.
[EDIT:
I tried changing the MII-12000 BIOS setting for display type from LCD to CRT, but this didn't make a difference.
I also removed the MTSVO touchscreen and put a regular CRT monitor on the system to test if the touchscreen might have been causing the problem. Roadrunner still crashes on startup with a regular monitor.]

For testing, I just wiped out my entire RR directory and unzipped a fresh RR-binary copy into the old directory. I then ran the config, and set up the day/night skin settings, and saved the config. I then added the debugmode=true setting to the rr.ini file and ran RR. It crashed again. Here is the info:

It's strange that it's saying "winamp window not found" since I haven't configured the winamp path, but it looks like the error is being caused by something with the onboard sound: GetLineControl Failed: 401![]()
Hopefully this isn't too big a deal to figure out...

I would strongly suggest to test it with Winamp/music/video paths setup.. RR should time out in 5 seconds after trying to start winamp.. but not crash.. the "failed" on the sound cards just means it doesn't support that feature..
IMHO it sounds like you may have some hardware issue coming up at high CPU LOAD and/or intensive memory operations.. can you post information or a screenshot of the DETAILS of the windows error ?

"Being happy is not about having what you want, it's about wanting what you have."
"The best things in life are always free - but that doesn't mean money can't buy you good things."
Where would the details of the windows error be found? The only thing in the crash window that pops up is what I posted above about "rr.exe has generated errors, etc etc" with either an "OK" or a "CLOSE" button (I can't recall which right now). There are no details beyond that.
I don't think it's a CPU/RAM instability as the machine overall is extremely stable even under high load. I've had it running at close to 95% CPU load for extended periods while testing. I tested starting RR again with the winamp/music paths set, and I had the windows task manager open. The CPU usage doesn't go above 50% on RR starting up, and the memory usage doesn't go above 70Mb. The system at startup is using approx 50Mb RAM.

RR goes through the startup screen, then hits the "Starting Winamp..." portion. Winamp starts up properly and sits at the top-right of the screen, then RR crashes, and winamp stays open. After RR crashes, winamp is still functional: I can navigate its menus, open and close the playlist editor, equalizer, etc.

I don't if this helps but I had a problem with RR crashing and it turned out to be the skin I was using. It was the slider code that was causing the issue.
Yeah I thought about that, so I've now tried 5 different skins, all with the exact same result. I also tried booting into safe mode and running RR and it crashed at exactly the same point.
I'm going to try connecting a PCI video card and seeing if it has something to do with the onboard video.
I'm also going to try reloading windows from scratch and then loading RR as the first app, before any others, and seeing if I can track down some kind of conflict that way. However, I don't think it's a hardware issue.

have you tried loading differen files on winamp before starting RR ? please let me know.. You may also try to disable ID3 support and/or delete main.* in the winamp\plugins\ml folder to see if it helps.. your INI seems pretty basic with no weird/advanced features.. so there's really no reason why it shouldn't work. The details for the windows error are normally displayed by clicking a "link" in the popup window with the ok/close buttons.

Well, I've been testing my system under windows XP SVC PK 2, and on a whim I tried Road Runner again. It worked without any problems, so it had to be something with my specific installation of win2k SVC PK 4. Strange.
One thing I've noticed though is that when I first ran Road Runner, I had winamp configured to show just the Track Title. I played around with it a bit, and then changed it to Artist - Album - TrackTitle. However, any albums from which I had already played a few tracks (when it was still configured for just TrackTitle) still showed just the TrackTitle, and did not display Artist - Album - Track Title.
