Only nerd that can't figure out roadrunner

I've tried many times and always given up. I'm so ready to switch from MediaEngine and get something with more configurability and options. I am hindered from doing this because its impossible to use road runner. First of all it doesn't come with a default skin and second of all half the time I cant get something to work.

So I stumbled across FlashDeck and I was so impressed that it has made me vow to get it running in my car. So I'm just testing it on my home pc right now and I am unable to get any music to show up in the stupid thing.

I've got the path setup in RR Config and everything but it just wont work.

How do I make it scan the id3 tags?? I want it to be a database simliar to itunes so I pick the artist then the album then the song but I have never been able to get this to work.

So can someone please help me out. If I get it working I'm going to write this biggest tutorial ever on how to get this setup.

here is the what I get when I go to Music->Browse

If I click on any of these nothing shows up below them, its like they are empty folders. That is obviously not the case though. Tons of music is stored underneath each one of those folders.

What you are seeing are the folders that my music is stored in. I don't want this, I want to see a list of Artist's that has been loaded from ID3 Tags.

Can anyone help me out here i'm pulling my hair out.

First off, do you have winamp installed?? Secondly, make sure the path to your winamp executable is configured correctly. Also, there is an installation package for RR with the base BMV2 skin. Make sure you run this installer. Any updates that Guino provides to RR can usually be made just by copying the executable over the old one.

Make sure you use winamp v 2.95. You can find it from Guinos RR page under the links section. Make suire you have all this, and it should work, if not we can diagnose further.

EDIT: RR relies on winamp for the ID3 tag information and for playing mp3's. etc.. On its own, it doesnt provide this functionality. Its controls winamp.

Isn't Flashdeck kind of beta right now? Maybe you should try LSX first. Most of that worked right away for me.

Also, I should warn you, the Nerd Counsel is not amused by this debacle. You're treading on thin ice. They may rescind your license if you're not careful. (But I agree, this computer stuff is hard. I didn't say that!)

if your new to RR and have previously had issues getting it to run. Go grab the default skin for RR (BMV2). Flashdeck isnt even done yet, its more like a preview release so for a newb i wouldnt spend time on that.
I feel you about there not being a default skin included in the download, this also delayed me using RR many moons ago.
Go to the faq sections and read EVERYTHING in there, and you may also want to take a look at the how to skin tuts (even if you dont plan on building your own skin from scratch now) so you can have a general idea as to how the skins are put together and how the system works so you can do lite editing of .skin files to suit your needs.
As allways, if you have any issues please do a good search as if it happens to you, chances are its happend to someone else already and theres TONS of info here related to setup, config, editing etc.
This may all take a sec to digest in your brain, but the prepwork will pay off later.
welcome to RR and have fun!

You couldn't even get RR basic to work and you tried Flashdeck, which is not even done yet? Read the freaking FAQ and follow the steps.

How do I install Road Runner ?

And if you download the RR InstallShield, it does come with the default BMV2 skin so I have no idea what the hell you're talking about.

it may take some work to set it up, but believe me it's worth it. Guino is always willing to help and the FAQ should get you started in the right direction.

thanks for the responses. I swear I had read through those faqs before but I guess not. Hopefully I can figure it out from that. It says to download it from

    http://www.majesticpw.com/roadrunner/

but i've always gotten it from http://guino.home.insightbb.com/roadrunner.html

what is the difference in those two sites?

Roadrunner needs a good website like mediaengine.org. Sure would make this process a lot easier, but I digress. Thanks for the help fellas.

For some reason, I always have to go and select the default skin (which is included with the install shield) manually in the config when installing RR for the first time. Maybe guino could fix it to automatically find it.

But yeah, RR was a freakin breeze. BUT I have no luck with all the ID3 tags and what not, from what I've seen, with RR you have to just make your own folders and everything and put your music in them. Then select your main music folder in the config and your set.

Sorry, I couldn't help but notice your genres of music are "Rap" and "Not Rap". I just thought that was funny.
