Well, it might be goodbye for a little while

Hi all. Well, I've upgraded my car from a '98 BMW 540i 6-speed to a Lemans Blue '01 M5. :-D :-D This is a very good thing, except the M5 has factory nav which I REALLY don't want to lose (it has other goodies too) I really miss the touch screen, but I can live with that.

What I can't live without is MP3 music. I HATE the radio and CDs are a pain. Even with a 6 disc changer, music gets old quick. It's nice to have your entire library at the touch of a button.

So, I will be back, but I need to find a way to do this without scrapping the factory Nav. I've seen some people do this before, but it's not cheap, and it's not easy.

Anyway, for now, I just want to say thanks to you all for the support. If you need any files hosted, just let me know, I'd be glad to do it for you.... and Guino! You rule and Road Runner is the best front end of them all.

they are great cars. I actually run the Seattle5s (E39 SIG here in the Seattle area) so if you want info on the car, let me know. I haven't sold my 540 yet, but I have a couple of offers.

If you're thinking about the 540, then you probably have been doing a bit of research... take a look at the following links

Best forum for the non-M5 E39
    http://bimmer.roadfly.com/bmw/forums/e39/

Place to BS with other E39 owners (this is where I spend most of my time)
    http://bimmer.roadfly.com/bmw/forums/e39-lounge/

Tons of info on the E39
    http://www.bmwtips.com/ (Click Tips and Tricks)
    http://bmwdiy.info/
http://www.540is.com/ (Good "they all do that" section)

Just an FYI, if you want an maintinance free car... this isn't for you, but it is a blast to drive and beautiful at that. Get the 6-speed if you really want fun :-D I'd also suggest a good set of tools and a Bently manual. I did almost every repair on my car except for the clutch. They're easy to work on, but the stealers (Dealers) charge an arm and a leg.

But like I said, if you're serious about buying one, let me know and I'll tell you want to look out for.

oh, and sorry, that wasn't a sly way of saying "make me an offer" it pretty much is already sold, my friend just hasn't finished the loan yet, and even if he falls through, someone at my work wants it too (something about an evil looking car, just appeals to people)

Yeh... I've been to your site before

For some reason I don't like (or just not used to) the way the roadfly forums look. I did do some research on the bimmerfest forums though
The asking price on your bimmer is probably a bit too high for me (my budget is probably going to be $10.5k).
What I noticed is that lots of the parts (radiator, etc) go out before the cars hit 120,000 miles. Would you say its better to get a higehr mileage car, since it most likely had that service done already?

No car is maintenence free. Some just require it more than others
Yeh... I was looking only at the 6sp... I got bored of my auto the first week I got my car
Plus, the 6sp 540s come with the sports package standard from what I've read.

Adjuster is supposed to look at my car tomorrow. So I'll know if I should be searching for a new car by then.

BTW: What do the insurance companies classify the 540 as? A sports sedan? Luxury sedan? Because my SC300 was classified as a sports coupe, when I thought it should've been a luxury coupe.

    he he he... especially mine

And here's the new beast!... kind of an understated evil.

you might be able to find an ok '97 for that budget, but I'd really try to add a few thousand more and get a good one. Though, if you get lucky (like I did with the 540 and the M5) you can get the best of both worlds. The E39 540 brakes in cycles. The engine will last forever as long as the oil is changed regularly, but the cooling system is just a problem. Ideally what you want to find is a well maintained car that just had a bunch of problems that scared the owner into selling it. This usually happens around 70k miles when the radiator goes. Then, within 6 months, the expansion tank goes (you really should have changed it with the radiator) and then on the older E39s the Water pump goes (pray you're not on some back road in the middle of nowhere like I was when this happens...) If you're not a DIYer, then the price shock of these repairs can scare you. If you do do your own work, it's not bad (170 for a new radiator, 45 for a new expansion tank, 250 for a new water pump....) Once the water pump is replaced, it shouldn't go again because the plastic impeller was replaced with a metal one in later years (and current replacement parts) You'll just have to live with replacing the radiator and expansion tank every 50-70k miles... but it's not expensive and not hard to do. I guess the point is just to look for a car where then owner is freaked out that it's falling apart and wants to get rid of it quick... you can get a good deal this way.

Insurance wise, it's not bad. It don't know it's technical classification, but it wasn't much more than my '94 Pathfinder to insure (and the M5 is only $15 more a month than the 540... next month I'll be 25 and it will be even cheaper :-D)

Yes, the 6-speeds come with the sports package standard, but that means different things in each year. In the '97 this just meant better seats, firmer and lower suspension, and different wheels. In later years this meant black window trim, different steering wheel, and a few other small things till 2003 when it meant the M Body kit.

Also, I think I wrote this above (but I'm too lazy to go back and read for it, plus it's really important) DO OIL CHANGES A LOT. The service interval according to the car is every 600 gallons of fuel used... which for most people is almost 15k miles. That's WAY to long. Most people do it twice that often, and I actually do mine every 3k miles with synthetic 0W-40.

E31s are awesome (my dream garage includes a '97 850CSI) but talk about problems. Most 8 series owners budget a minimum of 2k for repairs a year....

OH ya, and the good think about the '97 and '98 sport models with the cold weather package is that they have a heated steering wheel :-D Best option ever if you live in a cold climate.

Getting the video displayed on the nav screen is the only difficulty, but only because of the sync on green. I used a Matrox G200 video card ($5 on ebay) and adjusted the timings with powerstrip. The advantage of the G200 is that it natively supports sync on green. Otherwise any video card that can have its timings adjusted with powerstrip to interlaced NTSC will work - you will just need to add a sync combiner to get SoG. Follow the link in my sig. to see my solution. Let me know if you have any questions - I tried a lot of different things before settling where I did so I may be able to save you some frustration!
