Well I've been using roadrunner for about 6 months now and I gotta say I love it. My only gripe is the performance. Im currently using the january 2006 release on my carPC. It works perfect and sounds amazing! It is however slow when switching menus, espically the first time I launch a menu. I thought it may be because i have a via board but frodoplayer is fast as hell on my system, menu switchs as soon as I hit the button, no lag at all. I would use frodoplayer except the sound frodoplayer puts out is disgusting. I was switching back and forth yesterday to compare the frontends and frodoplayer sounds like im in mono and my highs are very dull. I launch roadrunner and BAM loud and clear like im at a damn concert. Anyway my main purpose of this thread is to figure out how I can improve performance in RR. I want fast menu switching. Even if I run a plain skin its still slow, although not as slow as say the alpine skin. Do i need to upgrade my release to the april version or will this not help? Any Tips to slim down RR to make it faster? Like maybe to load all the menus in advance so they are fast and responsive when its up and running? Any help is appricated.

This is a matter that is being worked on I believe. I did see a thread where it was being discussed. I have not tried the newer version if there is one. With out running out to the car and checking I'm pretty sure I have the same version as you. So I would say patience is a virtue my friend.

When you load up a new skin, run though all the menu's so when you go to them later they load faster.

Be careful with this. As there is a finite amount of screens that can be loaded at any one time. Depends on videocard memory so your mileage will vary.Originally Posted by pcfreak
Im just curious why a frontend like frodo can be so fast but sound ****ty, and basically the same thing "a frontend", roadrunner can be so laggy yet sound so good. Guess that is the tradeoff? I bet roadrunner can be developed to be faster but like you said, it takes time.

maybe cause programatically rr blows frodoplayer away. i switched to rr about a year ago from frodo and at that time it had already surpassed frodoplayer IMHO. Since then frodo has had one beta update and rr has had so many updates and IMPROVEMENTS added that you really cant compare it with much out there right now. RR started out as a music and video player... it has blossomed into somethin you can actually damn near replace your OS with in terms of controlling computer components. What additions have been added to frodo in the last 2 years? I can almost guarantee thats why its faster that rr right now

try this in RR.INI to speed up loading of screens:
enableclipping=false

RR's skins are much more flexible and customizable than Frodo's skin (for example, in Frodo, you can't have a DVD button on the GPS skin). Therefore, more time is needed to parse the skin file and create clickable areas, sliders, labels, etc. on the image file. However, after all the calculation is done and the skin is loaded into the memory, it should just be just as fast.Im just curious why a frontend like frodo can be so fast but sound ****ty, and basically the same thing "a frontend", roadrunner can be so laggy yet sound so good.
Didn't work on mine Guino. Maybe I need to do some updating if it worked for you.
