I good start will be to read this: Attention Newbies! Everything (almost) you want to know about GPS (Part 1)

Then it's a matter of opinion. For my everyday drive I would have used
    1. Iguidance Europe.
    2. Destinator (Mapmonkey).
    3. Autoroute.

    In that order.

To bad for my i don't have Iguidance Europe. (I have tried the US version.)

I've used destinator (garonav) for the last couple weeks and it got me completely lost in San Diego. I was pretty ****ed to say the least. Here I have a nice carputer and the damn thing got me lost!

So im gonna switch to iGuidance. Just got the latest and ill be installing with iGmod to help with the UI. Looking forwards to trying it out. Im gonna try and change the current IGmod skin also (the blu one) that PURDOOM did for it. Just want something darker and cleaner looking.

I'm actually using streets and trips. I used resource hacker to "tweak" the program for better touchscreen freindliness (thanks for the tips hypersprite). I like it for it's better north american coverage, streetnames, exits, routing options, gui, etc.
I used iguidance for a while, found it as accurate as streets but didn't like the lack of features. the 3d maps and contrast for in car use were nice though.
i don't think a program exists yet that i would call perfect for in car use.
I'd say if MS incorporated the 3d map option and perhaps the more color choices for maps it would be close to perfect (plus the changes I have).

I would say ........ahem.........."download"...............the ones you are interested in then spend the money to buy the one you like the most.

either way, I'd say what's best is very much a personal choice right now as no one program does it all.
    Cheers

I'm using the DeLorme Street Atlas 2006.
I don't think there is a European version, though.
It is bullet-proof, though some of the maps need GPS correction for alignment in some places.

Does street atlas allow you to correct for map inaccuracy or are you just saying they need to correct the maps?
If it's map inaccuracy, streets 2006 and destinator had the same issues when you get off the main roads. Does delorme use the Navtec maps and if so, what is the year on the maps?
Just curious, I may check out delorme soon.

    Cheers

They do their own cartography. DeLorme is one of the largest and most comprehensive mapping agencies in the world.
The software allows you to do a "draw layer" that is generated by your GPS tracking data, so you can make correction overlays.
These in turn, can be sent to DeLorme to be incorporated as corrections in the Street Atlas database.
