Screen Transitions, Pic Viewer & Album Art effects

Just wanted to start a conversation on the future of RR, namely transitions and sliding objects. I spent some time over the past couple days looking into MC apps such as Media Portal and Nero Home. While nowhere near touch-screen friendly, their effects do add to the overall experience quite a bit. I would like to know what effects are possible with VB and what are the limitations. I read somewhere that there is a DirectX 8 runtime library for VB and also ActiveX for GIF effects. Also, what is the general consensus with regards to default effects that you would like to see in RR.

Personally, I love the idea of "fading" or "exploding" screen transitions, but again, I'm not sure what is possible and what's not.

For the Pic Viewer (which is planned I'm guessing??) I would be happy with a simple fade, however my personal favorite is the Ken Burns effect.

Finally, I would love to see the lists (particularly the Album art thumbnails) slide up and down instead of a static refresh.

    Any thoughts??

I would love something like this also. Some of the default effects i would like to see in RR include fadeing and slideing, these two alone would add a whole lot to the experience. I know you can fadeing with VB, slideing should be possible. I have a pic viewer i just found the other day that was written in VB that has really good fadeing.
I would like some kind of pulseing too, instead of blinking it pulses or fades back and forth between the two states, for indicators.
Transitions for switching screens would be cool with options to slide (any direction) fade to, zoom fade. Others can be added for novelty.
I have this really cool app that does transitions on all your icons when you click them, its called UberIcon http://www.punksoftware.com/ (reference)

I think most computers should be able to handle this stuff, heck i can play UT2004 in my carputer with no problem. Any cheap videocard is more than capable of basic stuff. But not everyone has a beefy carputer and a lot have mini itx systems that seem to have a hard time just playing videos sometimes. So there should be an option to turn all that stuff off.
Doing the effects and or even loading everying under DX would also free up the main cpu to do other things.

overall i think it would add a shinny level of pollish to RR and enhance the user experience a lot.

Totally agree with being able to turn it ON/OFF. I also like your pulsing idea too... If you look at the Play/Pause button on Windows Media Player 11 is that what you are referring to? That would be awesome to see indicators flashing like that (buttons too if possible).

Now that i think about it... the indicators and button "downs" are on the empty/on images and RR sort of clips out the defined area of the "Off" image. I'm not sure but maybe if that defined area simply faded IN/OUT it would create the pulsing effect right? (considering the background colors matched on the on/off images)

    EDIT: I kant speell tuday

I actually had started work on transitions and scratched it off for the time being.. I think I'll have to go with GDI+ in order to make this usable.. the problem is that the requirements for GDI+ are much higher than current ones.

that would be very cool, to mark a button as fade in etc and it would apply a transition on only that button.

are we the only 2-3 people who are even remotely interested in any of this, thought this thread would of had a lot more replies?

LS, check out your beta link...

Lets just say guino is a freakin magician with VB.

here's a sneak peek (sorry guino, i couldn't help myself)

    -Zero requirements
-1 fading 9 sliding screen transitions
    -ON/OFF setting

They are very smooth and much faster than any flash effects. I believe gunio added this to all image objects meaning the albumart and indicators will be animated as well.
