I have a powermate, and only wanted it to control volume to begin with since there is nothing cool about cranking up your volume, while pounding on the touch screen to do it... Since then, i have had it working for volume, track up and down, and a system reboot. Its not that hard to configure, although i did have alot of problems with it crapping the bed on windows xp. It wouldnt start with the system alot of the time, and wouldnt come back after hibernate. Since then i hace installed a pci card with 5 additional usb 2.0 ports. Ive swapped the powermate to one of those ports and havent had a problem since. I think it has to do with the way windows manages its usb connections versus the way this pci card does.... It ahs great functionality, but its liek anything else that is "custom". You have to put time into it to get the results that you want from it.

I have one that I bought for an installation and we ended up not using it.

I will make you a good deal on it if you want one. It has never been mounted in anything, just bench tested.

PM me is you are interested.

I made my own control knob, from a $9 rotary encoder/8-direction joystick from mouser.com and a 10 button mouse I hacked up.

I use girder to take the button presses and send them to RR. It works beatifully

it's great for scrolling through playlists and switching songs

Thanks for the offer but since I live in Sweden I have a feeling that the shipping will cost more then the PowerMate itself... found it pretty cheap in a store...

And a big thanks to the rest of u... it helped me a lot deciding if I should go for a PowerMate or not... going to order it tomorrow...

Side note...Girder does not use a lot of system for as long as I have been using it...

I even use a plugin(GMR-2K), with it that srinks the mem usage from ~4.3Mb to 168K when it not receiving any commands...

It does depend on which plugins and devices you're using. With one IR transceiver plugin Girder (classic) is taking 17.7mb on my HTPC. I don't clearly remember how the Powermate plugin performed, but I remember I wasn't very fond of it.

If we re talking powermate I only have to say ShuttleXPress... do a search...

It looks more OEM (at least in an E46) and it so easy to set up it should be illegal!!!

I've tried both and unless you re a girder master( wich I'm not) XPress is a lot easier to set up and use.

    my 2 cents

    cheers

omg... talk about coming back from the dead.. this thread is old...

well, someone earlier in this thread suggested a ShuttleXpress to so I did search for it... and found it... I can't understand how someone can say´it's more OEM... that thing is huge...
Maybe in some other car but I couldn't think of one spot in my Volvo 740 that it would fit nicely... or at all...
I just added the extra money and bought a touchscreen instead... much easier and much cleaner!
