    question about transitions

what would make my transitions (between different screens) faster? better video card? more ram? faster cpu? im using the fade transition (#0) and its so slow that it almost looks bad. and then my computer is slow on top of that so it takes a few seconds after i hit a button before it goes to the next screen.

i guess this question is turning into how do i make RR faster and how do i make the transitions faster? (which i assume will happen if i make RR faster...) thanks

It would help to know what your CPU, Ram and GFX card are now to kind of get an idea what it could be.

Taking a couple seconds to respond to a button press is not normal, even on most of the slower machines. You could possibly have a flash version issue, but its hard to tell with the info you have given so far. Open the task manager, and see what your CPU is doing when RR is running. If it's maxed at 100% then there is something not right somewhere.

ok, first of all im running liquid_smoke's lsxvoid skin (the old one). i dont think it has any flash in it...? not that i have discovered at least. anyway, its a crappy computer -its just one that i have had lying around and i figured i might as well use it.

    1.00GHz intel celeron
    256mb ram
    running nlited windows
    ati 128mb pci card
    creative audigy sound card
without RR running the cpu usage is "0%"
with RR running it holds around 22% (+ or - 5%)
with the VISU on, it spikes to about 90% and stays there (ouch)
    - i know that that my AVS visu eats my processor alive
and lastly, my page file is 149mb with nothing running and 169mb with RR

im beginning to wonder if its that stupid CPU's fault. is there anyway i can change the transition speed or make RR switch between screens faster? RR works great on my other computer running onboard video so i dont think its the video card's fault. thanks

RR doesn't use hardware acceleration (for compatibility purposes), so CPU is definitely the answer.. though, I must warn you, everything is timed to an average of half-second minimun between screens so even at blazing speeds, it should still be visible.

ok, yea well sometimes my computer takes like almost 10 seconds to switch screens. thats a little more than half a second. even one or two seconds would be great. the fade transition just looks a little funny when it takes like 4 seconds for the skin to completely fade into the next. but thanks for the info about the cpu. now to find a cpu that doesnt eat much power but is fast.....

Why the half second minimum? and.. ..is there any way to disable it?

the RR source is published, so I would take a look around in there. Also, it's written in VB (not .NET), which could contriblute to the lag (at least it's not java )

Haha true, I suppose I could get in there and disable it myself. Was hoping for a config file or something of the like though.

Well now I'm off to see if I can find more info about how to enable this 'transition' effect..

You can configure transitions both on a global scale or on a per-screen basis.. just make sure there's no transition= line in RR.INI to disable it all together. There're plenty of posts talking about those options. /EFFECT is the parameter that can be in the .skin files to set the transition when leaving a specific screen.

Awesome! I've enabled transitions and it really does enhance the experience. I still do notice the .5 second delay though. Is there any way to decrease or even disable that? I've searched on it but haven't come up with many discussions about it.

I'll go poke around in the config files a bit.
