Im trying to get the vista image small enough that lower end PCs can run aero. Fully stripped down vista is about 600mb and provides the same functionality as a full xp install. Still testing for minimum requirements. . .
Why should I have to upgrade my card to use Windows....?

Let me rephrase for you....You mean if a bunch of stuff gets striped out I get XP functions ????

cool, I'll keep XP for a long time and still have the same functions. Glad you cleared that up for me

It may be another year before I have a deployable vista image but the point is I like working with the newest code available. IMO vista is bloated but it runs better than xp does. Everyone thinks that vista is just a flashy new GUI, they don't realize that there is 5 years of development behind the new code. Anyway my goal here is to strip EVERYTHING out of vista, except the kernel, aero theme, and calculator. Integrate my own drivers, and slip stream the install. The image will be running on compact flash like my current xp install. I would like to get the image down to 500 mb, I know this is possible with enough tweaking. Also when your image gets this small the system requirements for running the OS goes down. Ive seen a 700mb vista image happily multitasking on a minimum spec 850 Mghz celeron 256ram machine. Yes it may be premature to slap an OEM vista on the carPC but vista IS xp's replacement.

I like this idea - i'll probably try to do the same thing essentially when I re-upgrade to Vista this weekend. (first I need to confirm my touchscreen drivers work with Vista) I can definitely disable all services and processes that are unecessary but I'm a little sketchy about removing files to shrink things down. Any ideas what you might remove to save space?

Should be fun to see if this actually gives ANY benefit at all on a Carpc, personally i never see the windows gui, so i don't really see the idea. In my book vista is not xp's replacement, but rather it's bloated big brother....:-)
