i dont expect any benefit. The only reason I wanted to run Vista was so i could use the Vista MediaCenter which I am a huge fan of.

I always thought MCE 2005 ran fine at 640x480 or 800x600. Which parts did you not find down-scalable?

One of the benefits for Vista MCE is that they have made the new interface completley compatible with touch devices. In MCE 2005 there were places where you would absolutely need a mouse and keyboard. Thought I haven't tried it, the new Vista MCE is supposed to be a huge improvement.

actually, this whole article about Vista is very good.

the problem with mce as a frontend (at least for me) is it still isnt quite touch screen friendly. Its almost there but its clear this wasn't a priority for them.
The main issue being the play buttons on the lower right of the screen are still tiny as hell. Ive alway wondered what was the thought behind making them so small and pushed to the corner of the screen. Even if they were centered and spaced out evenly but still small it would look and function a lot better. This seems to be the biggest issue. Getting to your media is pretty easy, but once it starts playing, skipping songs, muting, volume changes may be a task.

All the other areas of the UI are very accessible on a touch screen with a few items still a litte too small for my taste. Like the two orbs on the top left. Clicking the small blue orb to go back may be a task in the car you'll likely just hit the bigger green orb to go home.

The small arrows on the top bottom and left right are pretty small also, but the active clickable area is actually a lot larger than the graphic, which is nice. Once you figure out you dont have to click exactly on the arrow, your good.

So even though i would say 95% of the UI is touch friendly, the most important area, that probably gets clicked a lot more than other controls, IMO is still way too small.

    heres a screenshot.

Everyone thinks that vista is just a flashy new GUI, they don't realize that there is 5 years of development behind the new code. Anyway my goal here is to strip EVERYTHING out of vista, except the kernel, aero theme, and calculator. Integrate my own drivers, and slip stream the install. The image will be running on compact flash like my current xp install. I would like to get the image down to 500 mb, I know this is possible with enough tweaking. Also when your image gets this small the system requirements for running the OS goes down. Ive seen a 700mb vista image happily multitasking on a minimum spec 850 Mghz celeron 256ram machine. Yes it may be premature to slap an OEM vista on the carPC but vista IS xp's replacement.
I sounds like you know what you are after and how to get it. Hope it works out for you.

now that I really think about, it wasn't so much scalability as it was the fact that media center just would not work in portrait mode.... I've been using tablet edition in the car & it really makes the pc more usable with no keyboard or mouse... I'm more intersted in the tablet functions in vista really, but it would be cool if the media portion worked in portrait mode, I guess you'd have to have a compatable video card though, mine has a rotate utility in the driver...., if anyone has the ability to test this it would be cool, that'd give me another reason to consider this a bit more

would be pretty sick if the media center was skin able, or at least alterable to fix the small issues of sizes & position

hmm, good point about the play buttons and track forward/back. I hadn't thought of that. I'm so pleased with Centrafuge after my first real day of playing with it in the car I may just leave things alone for now.

Or I may upgrade to vista and use mediacenter AND centrafuge. I feel a certain obligation to use mediacenter since I work for MS but I think i'll try to bring this issue to someone's attention internally. THis seems like a massive developing market that they should accomodate.

I thought they already had. Aren't they "in bed" with Ford in the States ?
