    CDR, I feel for you man! Doing something on a HTML page, is very hard to do without reloading the page. You can overcome this by using frames/iframes, hidden frames, and ASP. I ran into this problem a few years ago, when I set up all of my pages for my Home Automation system. The intent was the same exact thing, to be able to control it from any web browser on any device. Allowing me to turn lights on and off, check the status of the house, garage door, voice mails and all that fun stuff.

    I set this all up so long ago, that I just went back to look at the code, and it is like a foreign language to me.

    I do remember it has to be done in asp, and the command has to be processed by a hidden frame/page to trick the current page to stay where it is. You can also make the hidden page, change out an image on the main page when it is called ect. The ASP part is needed, as that can do a "Check" to see what buttons was used to call the page using typical IF/THEN/ELSE logic processing.

    Are you looking to perform an action using an image map? If so, you were close. Here is an example line of code within the image map block to accomplish it.

    <area href="vol+" shape="rect" coords="123, 258, 236, 313" HREF="#" onClick="HandleClick()" onMouseout="HandleMouseOut()" onMouseOver="HandleMouseOver()">

    The HandleClick(), HandleMouseOut(), HandleMouseOver() are my javascript functions that are called when the event occurs.

    Hope this helps...

    i have not been using rr, but i wanted to chime in here on the conceptual level since i have been working on something similar (not html)

    first have you found the ppc and smartphone sdk's for visual studio? they have an amazing api for controlling the phone using managed code, and it is chock full of example code.

    second, I like the http control idea, but more from the perspective of having a public ip for controlling it from anywhere. I think bluetooth would work better for this.

    lastly, addressing your question about avoiding refreshing, the best solution would be to use javascript's httpRequest object to send xml back and forth (ajax) but this is very hairy on the mobile browsers, even opera, which supports javascript, on pocket ie, forgetaboutit.

    I assume I would need the server I'm doing to support asp which would mean more coding

    Sure. Tell me exactly what you are trying to accomplish.

    NO, you don't want asp. That requires the IIS server to be running. ASP is just a tagged lanuage that needs to be interpreted. Running a server on a carpc seems like way too much overkill. PHP is the same thing.

    VB "compiles" to p code which is kinda like glorfied interpreting but it has already been pre-compiled and needs the vb6 run time library. Works well for a stand alone app.
