I ran into this problem when I was in China on my laptop. I can't read Chinese, but just seeing the boxes was worse. When I googled something, After I installed the language, I could then call someone else in the office to translate it for me :)
Just open control panel, choose Regional Language Options, Choose the Languages tab, and check the East Asian Languages option. (It will ask for the Windows disk)
I know how to get rid of the boxes. I just CBA. ;)

I have improved Unicode support on ilists for next release -- FYI, non-transparent ilists already work fine.
