Not to rehash an old argument, but many of my backgrounds are pictures I've taken and therefore, I want them viewable in my pictures directory, so my backgroundspath points to a subdirectory of "My Pictures". Now I have to not only transfer new backgrounds fron the skinners directory (wherever he decides to put them, but also modify the .skin files and ini files to point to my RR.ini defined backgroundspath before I can use a new skin.

I see this going the same way. I currently have all my plugins in the RR root awaiting this kind of standardization, but what if I want to put them in folders like "$RRpath$/Active Plugins" so I can manage my hardrive with folders for active and inactive plugins. Or for whatever reason, the end user should be recommended a default location, but whereever its set in RR.ini all new skins/plugins should check and use it.... and be useable from the enduser designated location.

Well the (my) recommendation is that the plugins have no paths hard decoded they should all be relative. so then it doesn't matter where someone installs it.

RR doesn't care where it is, as long as the DLL is registered.

Obviously non DLL plugins are a different matter and they will nedd other considerations.

well i'll speak to mitch about adding a plugin folder to the new installer. Should i write up a readme about plugin installation instructions and such as well? Least that way its on the local system and you dont have to go back to mp3car to look it up

just my 2p's worth , i really like the way you guys are getting rr organised , its needed, E with his threads on plugins and sonix browser, i take my hat off to you guys. a read me yes i think its time for a complete new help file on rr all together. but from say 80% of threads here , help files and read me's seem to be over looked .

now i am no expert but i am willing to do a help file and complete rr from getting in started to installing stuff and what ever anyone else thinks should be in there , but my knowledge on some stuff that i don't use and can never use here is limited.

so if you guys think its worth it i can do.

I think we need a consensus (as opposed to my unilateral list) on what we want with the plugins first. But yes instructions for both users and developers is definitely needed

Why not make it a standard location for plugins but you can change it in the rr.ini file? That way, people without a clue or care will have their plugins work properly while those who know enough to change the path can do so?

Same with backgrounds. Default is a \backgrounds folder but you can change it if you like.

I've just recently started messing with some of the newer plug-ins(RRTube, RRmedia, Elcolendar etc..) and for someone who has never really done anything except basic music functions on their carppc, I must say it can me a real pita getting things installed and functioning. I'm not complaining, I really appreciate all of the genius on this site. But I think Enforcer is 100% correct in stating that we need some sort of standardization.
