PDC is cool, but not needed if one is a skilled driver. PDC is actually a pain in the <you-know-what> sometimes, when it beeps all the time, because one back up in a thight place.

I disagree. The few seconds that it takes you to turn your head may result in an accident also. If the screen is covering all sides of the car, why would you turn your head? Now when these ladies reverse, its just because their abcent minded. I think if a screen comes on infront of them they are likely to pay attention to it. You are using your own eyes, your just looking at a system that has even more eyes and can see better.

Hi guys, thanks for your idea sharing. Here is the points I think:
1) Camera: like guino said, there are inexpensive usb-video adapters in the market and a simple code could easily receive the image. Even for the AV output camera, a video capture card can convert it to digital USB output. A camera with infrared will be a advance option.
2) Video Merger: The point is NOT to look the 4 cameras, it is the bird view which comes from the 4 camera (look at the left side of the pic). So a video merger is required.
3) Specific Video function: Beside the video merger, speical video function is also required. Since the camera has wide-angle len, the image is curve view(I don't how to say). The program need a speical function to convert it to the normal view. Just like the pic show:
that's a pretty cool idea, just needs a lot permanent modifying your vehicle. i would like to see it implemented.
I think the physical mod is only the 4 camera. The front and back side are easy. So only need install the camera in the rearview mirrors. Anyway, the mod is not difficult, the hard one is the video processing (rectification and merge)
I agree the camera part is easy. The video processing is easy also. It will not show you like you have it. It will show all 4 cameras though. You can just connect the digital quad processor to the AV part of your screen. Then hit the button PC/AV button to switch between PC and Cameras. If you want the image on a PC, then simply add a tuner card to the setup and have the Digital Quad Processor connect to that. My experience though is that USB tuner cards tend to have hibernation issues, so you may have to get a pci version. In my setup though I wanted Superior audio and there for had no PCI slot available. I then decided to just have separate systems.
Here is a link to the exact one I have. I like it because I can adjust the placement of the PIP images. So I have rear as main screen, then left camera in the bottom left hand corner and the right on the right bottom corner. I am sure that other versions do the same thing, but since I have only played with this one, I have never tried.

I think you are missing the point with the 4in1 screen.
The point is not to have 4 camera's images on the same screen. The point is to have the 4 camera's images modified and twisted through real time processing to create a single bird's eye view.
The video processing will not be easy, but it is doable. You will need really beefy hardware to even think about accomplishing this. Might even be easier to just rip out the embedded system from a Nissan...

Yes, it is the point.
First, we can get the 4 video stream from the 4 cameras, it is the easy part. Next, need a program to process the 4 video stream and create a single bird's view, which is a difficult part. That is why I request a plugin.
Theoretically, a API function can do this. Input are 4 image and output is the integrated image. Need some guy with image knowledge to help on this.
I doubt anyone will do this for free. Image processing is hell to program.
I suggest you put up a project on places like getacoder.com, scriptlance.com, or elance.com.
Scriptlance is full of Pakistani/Indian coders mostly and are usually cheaper. Elance is usually a mix of North American and Asian coders and is always more expensive but a lot more formal and contractual.
I would expect something like this to cost between $100-$200 out of the middle east, or between $1k-$3k out of North America.
I dont think anyone will donate this much time to a project for free.
