Is it possible to use some kind of optics to get it done simpler?
What kind of optics did you have in mind?

    Nah, I thought over it.
And any simple optics used will basically be inverse of wide angle and will reduce the area coverage significantly.

But I believe it should not be too difficult to do via software... as parts of such interpolation can already be seen in video effects available in abundance.

There is no limit for imagination :)

    That would be great.

I had a thought the other day, what if it was hooked to a car alarm that will trigger a PC startup, remote desktop, and recording via 3G cellular connection, that would be a vandal/thief's nightmare hehe

I doubt you will get all the imaging done with 4 camers either.
Most car lengths will not be covered from front to back with only one camera on the side. Figure a 60 degree viewable area then the hieght of your car. Placing the camera in the center of your rough pointing down at a slieght angle will only cover about half of the area you want.
I like the idea and it has many, many possiblities. But I figure at least 2 cams per side and 1 in front and back.
I have thought of this idea before, just in quick thought. THis could eventually be used to watch the line in the road and borders of the road to assist in automated vehicle guidance or safety control.
Say you swirve on to the shoulder or over a line in the road a warning could be announced or better yet Computer takes control of car and straightens you out.
I have heard of automakers allready working on this idea. But it may be a little while before it hits mainstreet.

That was why I simplified things. I decided I only need to see the blind spots of the left and right. I'm not that lazy that I cant turn my head left or right. Maybe I'm the only one that hates stuff to help you drive your car. If you cant concentrate on your own, you might as well just hire a driver. All this driver assist stuff drives me crazy. One example is Volvo's city stop feature. Basically the vehicles stops its self before hitting the back of another car. Well if the person wasn't trying to put on their makeup or have a chat and text message about who did what to the other, you wouldn't need all that stuff. I am all for advancing the car, but when it starts becoming the eyes and stopping the car and parking itself, thats way to overboard. I'm going to find it humorous when I hear about a guys LEXUS went crazy and drove itself off a cliff with him inside.

^ that's a camera for a door. instead of the glass eye..

but i don't think that this camera system works without nice and clean white stripes on the road

parking is easy enough. rear view camera is just an extra for that small blind spot

this is very interesting. i've been looking at the system, and found out the camera used is some sony cmos camera, but the interesting thing is that the image correction is built in to the hardware. so if we can find the camera, then it would be much easier to do the plugin.
