I am SO glad I have found this thread. I did a Bimmer carputer install last year on my e46 by replacing the dash system with a lilliput touchscreen and a mac mini Check it out
Since then, i got into a car accident, and bought an M3. Luckily, this one has a built-in nav, so I decided to go full OEM. I found a VGA->OEM NAV box that allows me to put the VGA output directly onto my gps screen. To accomplish this, all i needed to do was set the output of the computer to 800x480 30Hz interlaced, and whenever I want to change the input on the screen, I set the RTS bit on the iBus serial interface.
The unfortunate part of all this was getting the Mac Mini to output the correct resolution and refresh. Even using a customized gHead II adapter on my mac, I couldn't get the output as low as 30Hz. So, unfortunately, it appears I will have to step down from my dreams of doing a mac install again, and time to go with a PC again.
So now you understand why I am so happy to find this thread, this actually makes doing a PC project exciting again.
I have read this thread several times, and I am excited to get the mini-itx back online.

avidan - that's a bummer about the mini, I'm actually an apple guy so it would have been cool if you were able to get it to work! I'm not sure why the link wouldn't work, but here's a direct one to the pc page - BMWPC

My site is hosted on .Mac so it may have been down for maintenance or something, I'm pretty sure I haven't exceeded the bandwidth. My PC installation has changed quite a bit from what's there, actually, but I haven't had the time to update the site.

emilc - in my experience, the iBus is generally a white/gray wire with a yellow stripe, but I can't guarantee it's the case for your vehicle. In 95, the 7s used the PI-bus for the CD changer so you won't find it back there unless you have navigation or TV. The LCM is the bus master so you should definitely be able to find it coming off the module and also off of your radio depending on what type/model. I don't have a WDS, but that would be the best way to figure it out - then you can be sure of where it is and what color before you start dismantling the interior!

    clock info

Does anyone know how to update the clock in the intrument cluster. I know that the HeadUnit sends the clock data to the instrument display. With the HU removed I just get --:--. Has anyone figured out the IBUS message for it. I am using RR.

    thanks in advance.

    This Ibuscomm works great!

I used Reslers new USB ibus connector (which does not have problems with serial to usb drivers bluescreening).

The latest version of Ibuscomm is great. It scrolls beautifully! I changed the ini file to reflect the correct port and also changed the scrolling to FF from 80 - which sends it both to the display behind the steering wheel and to the radio.

A quick tip I thought I would share - I had an old motherboard laying around that had those "cd rom" style connectors. You know the kind that plug into the cdrom drive? Not the power or IDE but those little 4 pin ones. Well if you remove the plastic mount from the motherboard (it can be pulled off) and use the cdrom cable that plugs into it- it fits perfectly into the ibus controller AND is removeable.

Here is another tip. DON'T USE THE CDROM CABLE AS IS. Most of them share a common pair of black (power) lines. I learned this the hard way through the production of the magic smoke. Because of the way the ibus cables are pinned, ground and 12v are 1 pin apart. The middle pins. The middle pins of the CDROM cable are simply twisted together past the heat shrink tubing. You have to cut off the ends of the connector and splice it in - or make your own cable.

I am glad this version of Ibuscomm doesn't use 100% system resources when it connects to the wrong port. Poor programming on the part of the original author Atleast it was a good start though.

iGuidance street names on text readout

There are several references to text input into the i-bus system. Has anyone developed a way to get street names or directions to scroll from iGuidance. I would like to keep my OEM radio and place the touchscreen in the sunglass cubby - problem is my fiance keeps looking down at the screen b/c iGuidance doesn't provide audible alerts of street names like other GPS programs - it would be wonderful if the name of the next turn could scroll across the radio or main dash read out. Thanks -

I've wanted this for a while

if you look at igmod (I think that's what it's called) it allows iGuidance integration into RR, and it's able to pull out street names. If you can get the names from that, then I guess you can just send them to the scrolling mechanism (either to mid or instrument cluster)

Thanks for your messages Sama. I am using iGuidance with RR and I am not familiar withthe skin pulling out the street names. This could be because I only use iGuidance imbedded in the Simplistique skin. Can you explain how RR pulls out street names and if there is a specific skin to which you are referring?

Ironically, there was a post today that the next version of iGuidance is expected to include text to speech and verbally announce the street names -
