You'll need a plugin that can get the info and the create a custom label.
Can someone point me in the right direction for how to make an RR skin show an indicator for the # of emails in a pop account? Is this possible?

writing a plugin sounds like the solution, however, you'll have to write something to obtain the number of emails from whatever application or server you're using -- most likely different for each application/email server. Honestly seems a whole lot of work for something little.

Thanks for the replies - I guess I'll just have to use a widget/gadget from konfabulator/yahoo, desktopx, etc. for getting the counts of unread pop mail.
Since I deinstalled my car pc, I want to use my Xenarc as a secondary screen to my desktop, sort of a touchscreen mini control panel. My plan was to use Roadrunner for this, to display the time, date, weather, rss news, and I thought it'd be neat to have some email indicators, to know when I have new mail without openining up Outlook, etc. Perhaps I can crack open the code from some of the afore mentioned widgets to see how they do it, and write something that will return values to a label in RR. Perhaps it would be easier to have outlook running in the background, and have the label just represent # unread emails. The windows xp login screen has access to that info, perhaps it's easy to reuse?
Here's a quick and dirty extension plugin for counting emails waiting on a pop3 server. Is this what you were after?
It implements one label "emailcount_emails" and one indicator "emailcount_indicator" - the label is the number of emails on the server, the indicator is on when there's emails on the server, off when there's not.
If there's a problem logging into the server (password wrong etc) the emailcount_emails label contains "ERR".
There's a config file emailcount.ini that supplies pop3 server, port, username and password, and poll interval (in seconds).
To use, stick the emailcount.dll somewhere on your system, and run "regsvr32 \path\to\emailcount.dll". Stick the emailcount.ini in the same directory as the dll, and change the server/username/password lines.
In your menu.skin, add the line:
X,emailcount
then add the label/indicator to your skin somewhere.
I was about to say that pop3 is probably one of the easiest methods to get that info from.. nice going festy -- I'll move this to the Plugin section.
