Ah fair enough i was just thinking start a new thread in the released forum, not a sub forum. Yes everyone will rush to adopt the latest technology only to figure out they sold all their privacy and people like me start having fun on the highway. Oh was that the mp3 you wanted to blast and annoy me in traffic... deleted. Looking at these car systems, the car companies are rushing to field, just wow. Car companies playing with computer is like middle management trying to code again, it's just hilarious. Wait guys I've got it we'll save cost and put engine control on the same can bus as the wifi card and the mp3! Just like boeing brilliant idea to put passenger traffic on the same switch as aircraft control, but it has 'super' security, it was protected by vlans. Yea super all right.

I'll take having my own computer, which I control and is loaded my own code on. And if i screw up, worst you can do is set me back a day to drop a new image, and read the engine data, clipped the write line.

Hey Everybody! First, and foremost, an apology for my lack of posting in the forums lately. I have to be totally honest with everyone, I simply had just gotten completely and utterly burned out working on the DFX skin. It has consumed just about all of my spare time in the evening and weekends for almost 3 years! At one point, Tony, (AKA BlueZX3) and I would would work on the skin, talking voice over Yahoo 6 ~ 10 hours every day!

I needed a break, from not just the skin, but the computer in general. I have not been working on the computer near as much lately, leaving so much more times for many other things that I enjoy doing. Winter has been beautiful, with the cooler weather allowing me to do some landscaping, yard work, cook outs, fishing, hanging out at the beach and pool, and working on my Fiero project. I Realized something during all of this, The one side effect, that working on the skin for the past few years has done, is prevent me from getting a sun tan! LOL

Another issue seems to be the age of the smart phones, and tablets, slowing down the forums. It has been like a ghost town in here at times. Sure I use my phone to check email, and a couple IM's and FB apps here and there.... but I am not in any way going to try to use a phone or a tablet to replace my CarPC. First, I do not what to have to determine what 16 Gigs of music that I want to take with me today.... I want ALL of my music in the car I also would much rather look at a nice 7" screen in my dash when I need GPS, and not some 4" screen suction cupped to my windshield. To each their own, but I am sure I speak for a good core of people, who intend on keeping their CarPC's.

    Ok, all of that aside.....

The skin still continues to evolve, just not as fast as before With the latest version, the first major thing is the removal of the DFX patch. With people having so many issues with the MP3Car Store, and trying to purchase the patch, it has just been eliminated. To those that purchased the patch, which I have to say, was not many people, THANK YOU! It is much appreciated, and definitely helped as an incentive to keep things moving along. So Tony has removed all of the code related to the patch, and a shareware splash screen should never be seen again.

Next, Tony spent a considerable amount of time cleaning up bugs in the skin, and has continued working on DFXVoice. Let me take a moment to let everyone know, that Tony has picked up that ball, and made sure to get this new version of the skin out, with little to no help from me So make sure to thank him! Tony has put together a brand new DFX installer (Available in the AppMart as DFX 5.1.2), that fixes all the stuff above that he mentioned. One of them being some issues with the updater. The updater should be working much better now, and no need to have to download full installers in the future, barring any MAJOR updates and such.

Also I created new skins for a couple of Sonic's new plugins, Shoutcast, and Pandora Radio. I still have a couple of little tweaks to do on them, as he finalizes his code, but that is where the auto updater comes in handy

Enjoy the bug fixes, and rest assured, that DFX is NOT a dead project by any means!

I feel your pain man. I needed a break from all of the carPC thing too. IE: changing a engine, and fixing up other friends rides, job... etc.

Plus, real life situations will deffinently get first priority, and fun/hobbies for me will always take a back seat in our household.

Same here. I don't see myself ever replacing my CarPc's for a phone/tablet either. And I own 2 Tablets, and the UI just doesn't cut it for me to use safely
in a moving vehicle, with no nice big buttons and not be able to put your personal touch, look and feel the way your can with a FE/skin etc.

This is why DFX will always be my #1 top choice used skin for me w/ RR.

It's nice to hear from you, John.

I'm one of those folks who hasn't been very active in the forum lately. You and Blue are partially to blame. You guys have done such a good job with DFX that I don't need to spend much time here anymore. DFX does everything I want it to do and does it dependably! After the many thousands of hours you, Blue, Guino, Mitch, Sonic and others have put in, RR with DFX is a very mature, stable product.

I do believe the availability of smartphones and tablets has taken away much of the "WOW!" factor of carputers. But no one is going to take away my carputer. As you say, it provides unlimited storage space, unlimited customization potential, a much better screen, and a much better interface. Plus, it's easy to work on. I can replace broken parts or upgrade parts in an instant. Try that with a smart phone or tablet.

I'm looking forward to upgrading to the new DFX version. Many thanks to you and Blue for all your hard work.

Like others I've been gone for a while because things were working, but now I'm having multiple issues that are not with DFX and trying to decide whether to just chuck the whole thing or not.

And now I read that iGuidance is not updating any more, so eventually we have to find a new solution. What are you all thinking of for a new navigation program?

Glad to hear the project is still ongoing! I'm just in the midst of my first CarPC build, and am looking forward to using DFX in it, I have been playing around with it on my home computer, and really like it. I hope you left the option to donate in the appmart, as I will definately be donating once I get it into my car and working. Thanks for all your (and Tony's) work, and looking forward to future updates!

Good question, I was also wonder about that myself. I guess there is iGo, or maybe still use GarminPC and if you own the GPS unit to still retrieve your updated maps.

Unfortunately, those are not the best options either.... iGo never officially released a PC version of their GPS, the one people are using was a demo that leaked. As for Garmin, that one has also been discontinued.

With just about all phones having GPS on them, I guess the GPS software manufacturers are dropping the PC software pretty much all together.
