i have a big problem. i have installed dfx on two computers runing win7 x64 without any problems. but on the carputer it wont run period. i have installed uninstalled everything several times with no success... this is a "fresh windows 7 x86 install" up to date with windows updates and video drivers. RR will run perfect on its default skin after install. but when DFX5 is installed it will hang and crash on the "starting DFX5..." splashscreen. updated flash, video drivers, c++, directx but cant make it work. the debug shows this:

I have to say, as sad as it is, I have pretty much stopped working on the DFX skin. It was a long run, and a fairly successful skin if I do say so.

Technology unfortunately has moved on, and Car PC's are not at the "cutting edge" that they once were. When and why I got into CarPC's, was to do things I could not do with anything else. It was unheard of to be able to have GPS screen in the car, or that you could take your entire music collection with you. Later came the ability to use 3G and such to check email, get the current weather, radar maps and other information. Then recently to the skin came the ability to be able to play a song just by speaking.

ALL of these features are now on just about everyone's phones. Since the original iPhone came out, and shortly after Android phones, more and more people have abandoned CarPC's in favor of phones and tablets. The page views here on the MP3 Car forums have dropped by 80% in just the past few years. It also happened FAST! At one point there were 40+ new threads and posts all over the RR forums a day! It took just 2 years for that to slow to maybe a post or 2 every few days.

I personally will have a CarPC in my car, just because of the customization that is possible. I do however have a Galaxy S3 phone and a 10" tablet that I use daily. So, the PC in the car will be mostly used as access to my 80,000 + MP3's, and a few other tasks, and some hardware with the Fusion Brain. The phone and tablet will be my mainly used items for sure.

I know, but my main reason still for the carpc is the "frontend and the skin" makes it super easy to use in a car. I don't see anywhere on the Android and iPad an easy way to go from music satellite radio GPS etc while driving.
Needs to have big buttons and see the GPS & music at the same time too.

I have no desire to abandon my carpc, I think the key division between the tablet/ phone/factory radio group versus the PC group is if you appreciate a good audio system, the car PC is still the best/ easiest way to get it done if aftermarket HU functionality is not enough for you. IMO, the PC kills any head unit out there just due to the features/customizing ability.

Audio wise, if your happy to plug a 3.5mm plug into a tablet or phone and plug the other end into an aux-in on a factory POS radio, then the PC really doesn't make any sense, your wasting your time & money. The quantity of features in tablets/phones is approaching the PC but the quality of audio is a real challenge to match.

Good response PhilG. I use a tablet now. Only feature I miss over a CarPC is reverse camera. There have been advances in ROM development. You can now hook up a USB DAC to the tablet in host mode. Personally I find the tablet easier. Everything I wanted is built in save the reverse camera. To each his own. Just a matter of what you want.

Don't get me wrong, I am not abandoning my CarPC by any means! I like having a dedicated screen, with big buttons, and laid out the way that I want. That is the problem with a tablet, it is almost like running windows without a front end. One program for music, another for GPS and so on.

A CarPC is way more versatile and powerful than a smartphone or tablet due to access to so many peripherals but definitely lags behind in many areas. Maybe refocusing on integrating the CarPC with mobile devices would result in the best experience.
I currently use only a few of feautres of the CarPC compared to a few years ago. Pretty much only use it for audio (HQ setup), dashCam dvr and the few occasions were the CarPC GPS navigation was more convenient than holding the phone for google maps while driving. Still planning on implementing a fusion brain one of this days for some automation. For everything else I just use the smartphone

As for the integration I would like to have, it can be as easy as figuring out a way to stream audio from the phone to the CarPC via blutooth AD2P or even ad-hoc wifi. Add some remote playback controls so you can control the carPC from the smartphone and we are back in business

FWIW I still think this is a very good if not the best front-end/Skin combination available

    cheers

Display lyrics some words are cutoff.

Is there a way to have DFX not cutoff some of the words in the display window?
I know I can change the font size but then it is too small.
Is there a way to tell it to only put x amount of characters on a single line?

I thought I would have to reformat all the lyrics in the tag info but that does not seem to work either.

Any way to get it to format the characters correctly?

    Thanks

Putting together a system for the first time since 2007. Fresh XP SP3 install, fresh RR install, and decided to give DFX a try as my skin (since it seems to be the only one with active support). I went to set up my music first and followed the instructions to click "Build Music Database" to get started, but all I get is an error message "Automation Error, Invalid Syntax, RMBuilder". I did a thread search and didn't see anything useful. I have the latest version of everything. Any helpful hints on how to get the music for this skin set up?
